Get Out the Vote

The League of Women Voters of Pennsylvania (LWVPA) is coordinating Get Out The Vote (GOTV) efforts for the upcoming election aimed at mobilizing our members and engaging voters.

GOTV activities such as postcard writing, text banking and phone banking are coordinated through the LWVPA Voter Services Committee. A group of our LWVCDC volunteers gathered to get out 500 postcards using the list and toolkit provided by the League of Women Voters of Pennsylvania (LWVPA).

Postcard featured the LWV Vote411.org tool and personalized messages such as:

  • Voting is Your Superpower. Vote to make democracy work.
  • Your vote is your voice. Make democracy work - VOTE.
  • Your vote truly matters. Vote to shape our community's future

Last-Minute Election Tips

Polling Place: Check Vote411.org of vote.pa.gov if you are not sure where your polling place is. You can check in at any polling place, the electronic poll book will tell you where your polling place is and print a ticket to turn in at the correct precinct.

Mail Ballot: If you asked for but did not receive a mail ballot or if you discarded it, You can still vote provisionally at your polling place. The judge of elections will help you prepare a provisional ballot that will be counted after election day if your mail ballot is not received.

Voting on Election Day: If you received but did not return a mail ballot, you can take that ballot and the return envelope to your polling place, remit them and receive a regular ballot to vote. You will not have to vote provisionally as long as you remit the mail ballot, filled in or not. That ballot will be destroyed.

First Time at Your Polling Place: You will have to show identification. It does not have to be a photo ID. Your green registration card from the Election Bureau is acceptable.

Designated "Inactive": If you are designated as "inactive" in the poll book because you haven't voted in a long time, you will also have to show ID.

Video of the Month: Election Certification Challenges

LWVCDC's October Hot Topics program featured a lively and informed panel discussion about the potential legal challenges to ballot certification that could arise on both the county and state level following the election.

Watch Delaware County Election Director Jim Allen, ACLU Attorney Marian Schneider and Common Cause Executive Director Jill Greene talk about their preparations to meet these challenges and others as our state - truly a battleground state in every sense of the word - goes to the polls Nov. 5.

Save the Date: Holiday Gathering Jan. 4, 2025

The gathering will be a luncheon at Springhaven Golf Club, 600 South Providence Rd. in Nether Providence. Festivities will start at 11:30 a.m. We'll be looking back at our action-packed year and looking forward to our "defending democracy" goals for the next two years.

LWVUS decided at its convention last June that the League of Women Voters will concentrate full bore on getting our respective states to adopt the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact as a first step toward eliminating the Electoral College, which requires a constitutional amendment.

Brett Dolente, LWVPA Member at Large, will speak about the history of the Electoral College, the NPVIC Compact and the LWVUS Moonshot Goal to abolish the Electoral College and work toward One Person One Vote.

We'll have some fun too. Watch for emails in December with the registration forms, costs and menu choices.

The League Was Attacked and We Are Fighting Back

The Delaware County Daily Times ran a paid ad in which the Republican member of the county Election Board called us "the provisional wing of the Democratic Party."

In our view, "them's fighting words" and we are not going to take it in silence. The presidents of the three local Leagues collaborated on a response that referenced the paid ad. We were told the piece would be put on line that day and printed in a couple of days, but it was not. When we inquired, the editor told us we could not respond because it was in response to a paid ad. We then revised the letter without reference to the paid ad and submitted it again. The editor again refused because we referenced the election official - which was the whole point - but is currently offering to print the bottom half of the letter, which cuts out all context, on Sunday, Nov. 3. Watch for that version and read our version here: Letter to the Editor.

Fair Districts PA Goes Back into the Fray

By Deirdre Gibson, Delco Coordinator

Fair Districts PA is a project of the League of Women Voters of Pennsylvania but operates separately. Some of our members have been part of this team since FDPA was established in 2017 and others are quite new to the fight against gerrymandering in our state.

Now, Fair Districts wants to continue strengthening our team as we prepare for a big push to create an Independent Citizens Redistricting Commission before the next redistricting cycle in 2031.

Following the election on Nov. 5, I hope you’ll want to take on a very special assignment: to build closer relationships with state legislators. I’m looking for a constituent for each state senatorial and legislative district to be a legislative liaison—someone who will communicate from time to time with their legislator and staff about FDPA’s work and goals. If you’re interested in learning more about the role please sign up HERE and I’ll get back to you to talk it over. Signing up is not a commitment – just a signal to me that you want to know more about the role! You can also email me at fdpadelco2@gmail.com.

Bills Will Be Back

The redistricting bills that we support are being revised now, based on what FDPA volunteers heard during visits to legislators this year. The bills will be reintroduced in the House and Senate in the new session (2025-2926) in January, and we’ll need to be prepared to push hard to have them enacted. So that you can get up to speed, after the election we’ll hold another regional meeting to review our plans for the start of the new legislative session.

Thank you again for your investment in the fight against gerrymandering. If we want to restore the health of our democracy, we must abolish gerrymandering!

International Study Committee Tackles Middle East Realignment, High Seas Treaty in November and December

In the midst of war and turmoil in The Middle East, what should America's role be going forward? Can the U.S. continue to defend its interests in the Middle East and globally without promoting a wider war? The topic review is Chapter 1 of the Great Decisions 2024 briefing book: The United States and the Middle East.

The Dec. 10 discussion will be about the High Seas Treaty, an international agreement to protect the environment and preserve biodiversity in international waters.

Both discussions will be held at 12:30 PM at Wesley Enhanced Living 100 Halcyon Drive, Media, in their Art Room. Attendees can bring a bag lunch or purchase food at the Bistro Cafe located at the facility. For more information about the December meeting, click HERE.
