Dr. Leigh Moore, ADN Program Coordinator, Dr. Becky Anderson, 2nd Year ADN Instructor, Dr. Karen Hopkins, 2nd Year ADN Instructor, Dr. Leslie Jackson,1st Year ADN Instructor, Dr. Billi Jo Wilkinson, Simlab Coordinator, and Dr. Melissa Arthur, Dean of Nursing, Allied Health, and Natural Sciences have all successfully defended their Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) together as part of the same cohort. Dr. Arthur shares, "It’s a joy to see the achievements of this remarkable group." This monumental achievement will officially commence on December 14 at Northern Kentucky University's graduation ceremony.
Dr. Quentin Johnson states, "When multiple faculty members achieve this distinction, it reflects the institution's dedication to maintaining a high standard of education and professional development. Students, prospective students, and healthcare partners view the program as led by highly knowledgeable and skilled professionals, boosting SVCC's reputation in the education and healthcare sectors. Students are drawn to programs where faculty are not only highly qualified but also respected in their field."

Military Heroes Participate in
Workforce Training

Recently, Southside Virginia Community College Foundation partnered with Microsoft Hire to pilot a training course to provide all inclusive hands-on training to U.S. Military Heroes at the Lake Country Advanced Knowledge Center. Participants are transitioning from their service in the military into potential roles with Microsoft. Students ran simulated tickets at the Center for Information Technology Excellence (CITE) in the mock data center that mimic common tasks for both Site Services and Critical Environment teams. Attention was given to safety, work processed, and developing hands-on proficiency within the environment.
Dr. Chad Patton, Dean of Career and Occupational Technology, states "it is truly an honor to be chosen as the training provider for this pilot. We appreciate the Heroes' service to our country".

SVCC Foundation and VCU Health CMH Foundation Host A Night of Jazz | |
The SVCC Foundation and the VCU Health CMH Foundation joined forces to host a memorable evening of jazz, raising funds to support nursing students' educational needs. First year ADN student, Emmanuella Okoye, greeted the audience and shared how receiving a SVCC Foundation Scholarship secured her dream of becoming a nurse.
Minus2, comprised of SVCC's Dr. Daryl Minus, Vice President of Enrollment Management & Student Success and his brother, Dr. Eric Minus and band brought the stage to life, filling the room with electrifying energy and soulful melodies!

McCargo Receives VCCA Showcase Award | |
LaTrisha McCargo, Estes Center Coordinator, was recognized as a Showcase Award winner at the VCCA 's 40th-anniversary conference held in Virginia Beach on September 19th. To be considered for this award, faculty and staff must be a VCCA member that is in good standing. The award winner is nominated and selected by their respective college in the VCCS. McCargo was selected due to demonstrating excellence in several significant contributions to education and Southside Virginia Community College.

Regional Collaboration in Building Trades Training Development | |
Southside Virginia Community College (SVCC) , alongside Danville Community College (DCC) and Patrick & Henry Community College (P&HCC), successfully hosted a landmark signing event on October 14th, 2024, marking a significant milestone in workforce development for the region.
The event celebrated the formal commitment of the three community colleges to expand building trades training programs across the southern Virginia region through Career and Technical Education (CTE) academies, dual enrollment opportunities, and early college programs.
Dr. David Doré, Chancellor of the Virginia Community College System, underscored the importance of the collaboration, stating, “Regional collaboration between our colleges and industry are critically important, both to our understanding of the Commonwealth’s workforce needs and the ability to expand training programs that are in great demand from employers. These include construction and building trades in Region 3. I am grateful to our colleges, local school divisions, and partners for their continued innovation and commitment to providing life-changing opportunities for Virginians in Region 3 and throughout the Commonwealth.”

First Generation Celebration | |
Student Activities hosted a variety of activities to celebrate first generation students and graduates. Throughout the week, students engaged with other first generation students and alumni, participated in the Financial Escape Room, played games, and chatted with other first generation students during lunch. | | |
