Stormwater Strategies: Protecting Our Waterways

The City is investing in capital infrastructure improvements that reduce the amount of pollution entering into our rivers and streams from storm water runoff. Stormwater improvements have been made in routine maintenance and operations (street sweeping) and during new construction (High Street sidewalk and curbing, Constitutional Way and Cemetery Road are examples of where road reconstruction included stormwater improvements. Our seasonal fall /spring leave and brush residential collection service is also one of the ways to reduce water pollution into our river, streams and wetland areas.

Save the Pipes!! Don’t Flush Wipes!!

Our Highway and Wastewater Treatment Plant personnel continue to address the problems with blocked or slow draining sewer mains that get blocked by such items as wipes and oils.  Please note that wipes often advertise that they are “flushable” but they are not and do not easily pass through our sewer mains, pump stations or wastewater treatment plant. Fats Oils and Grease from cooking are also a problem when disposed of down the drain.

Water Distribution Division to conduct water main Flushing

The Water Distribution Division staff will be conducting night time hydrant flushing on high traffic streets starting in November. This routine maintenance program helps to maintain water quality throughout the water distribution system. Water main flushing can cause a temporary discoloration of your water supply. If you do experience discoloration, please run a cold water tap for a short time to clear your water.

Any questions or need for additional information can be addressed by calling Michael Bobinsky, Director of Public Works & Utilities at 603-692-4266 or email mbobinsky@somersworthnh.gov.

Driveway, Obstruction & Trench Opening Permit Reminder-Winter Moratorium takes effect November 15-April 15.

As a reminder, any work done within the City Right-Of-Way requires a permit. Examples include resurfacing or rebuilding your driveway, with a new driveway apron connecting to the streets, street openings for utility connections and if occupying a street or sidewalk with staging or roll- off for debris removal /property repairs. The annual winter moratorium takes effect from November 15-April 15; prohibiting any excavating or work in the ROW during this period.  If you have questions on the work you intend to complete within the Right-Of-Way, please call the Public Works Department at 692-4266. Permit applications can be located at the City website on the Public Works & Utilities Engineering page https://www.somersworthnh.gov/engineering

Highway Crews to clear vegetation overhanging onto Streets/Sidewalk Snow Plow Routes

In preparation for the upcoming 2025-2026 winter season, Highway Division personnel will be conducting tree and shrub clearing that impacts City street and sidewalk plow routes during the month of November. While the Department knows many property owners recognize the importance of clearing tree limbs and shrubs that overhang onto streets and sidewalks to avoid accidents, damage to equipment, and restrict pedestrian walkability, there are some areas where Highway personnel must respond to ensure proper clearance exists. Property owners are urged to conduct trimming operations if trees and shrubs are overhanging onto the Street in advance of City crew’s work.
