Sept. 8, 2026

Image description: This image captures a moment at an MBTA subway station, focusing on the fare gate area. The main subject in the foreground is a woman facing away from the camera, towards a fare gate. She has long, wavy blonde hair pulled back slightly with a yellow or tan hair accessory.  She is wearing a patterned top (possibly blue, green, and white dots or shapes) and light blue or gray pants. She is carrying a large, light-colored, woven tote bag over her right shoulder. The woman is standing directly in front of a modern fare gate. The gate features a sleek, rectangular device with a screen displaying a bright "GO" command and a large green upward-pointing arrow, indicating passage is clear. Immediately behind the fare gate and slightly to the right is a transit station employee or security guard. He is a middle-aged man with a light complexion, wearing a bright blue uniform shirt with a yellow collar and patch. He also wears a dark blue cap and a dark sling bag or fanny pack across his chest. He is looking directly forward, past the woman and towards the camera, with a serious expression. He is positioned behind a clear plastic or glass barrier marked with yellow signs that read "KEEP HANDS CLEAR". Background and Environment:
The area behind the guard and gates is rich in texture and color, dominated by a large, colorful stained-glass or mosaic wall art installation. The art features abstract geometric patterns and various shades of brown, red, green, and yellow, suggesting an older, possibly historic, station design. To the right of the 'GO' screen, there is another fare gate device displaying a white hand icon and the text "TAP HERE" on a black screen, indicating a contactless payment option. The metal fare gate machinery itself is silver/stainless steel and includes small stickers or engraved text with contact information for help (e.g., "FOR HELP 517-223-3280 MACHINE 421287").

Diabetes Education in ASL

From Heather Aldridge: I’m currently working temporarily with a research team at the University of Utah. We’ve developed a 12-week educational program designed specifically for Deaf and hard of hearing individuals to learn more about diabetes.
The program covers key topics such as:

- How insulin works

- What A1C means

- Recognizing the signs of diabetes

- How to check blood sugar

- Understanding diabetes medications

- The difference between hyperglycemia and hypoglycemia

- The entire program is presented in American Sign Language (ASL).

And we’ve just finished building the website (it’s currently being reviewed by another group).

Right now, we’re looking for participants to review the program and provide feedback before it officially launches. Participants will receive $275 for their time and insights. The program starts this September.

If you know someone who might be interested, I’d love to connect with them!
