That is the work of our State Party Chair, Christale Spain, and the vision she calls Flip the Future. Not flip the script. Flip the future. The future is not something that happens to us. It is something we decide.
And it’s worth being honest about the future we’ve been handed.
We’ve been handed a future where a South Carolinian can work forty hours and still not make rent, because this state has never set a minimum wage of its own above the federal floor of $7.25.
We’ve been handed a future where hardworking families fall into the gap, earning too much for help and too little for coverage, because South Carolina still refuses to expand Medicaid, and Washington has now voted to cut it even deeper.
We’ve been handed a future where politicians in Columbia decided they know better than a woman and her doctor, and passed a ban that takes away her decision before many women even know they are pregnant.
We’ve been handed a future where public dollars are pulled away from public schools, and our teachers are asked to do more with less, year after year.
And we’ve been handed a future where the right to vote, the right that makes every other right possible, is treated like a privilege to be rationed instead of a freedom to be protected.
That is the future they wrote for us. We do not accept it.
A budget is a moral document. A law is a moral document. A ballot is a moral document. Each one tells you who the powerful think matters. Our job this fall is to remind them that every family in Aiken County matters.
We believe that if you work, you should not be poor. We believe health care is a right, not a reward for the lucky. We believe freedom means a woman makes her own decisions about her own body. We believe every child in Aiken County deserves a great public school in their own neighborhood. And we believe democracy works best when every eligible voter can cast a ballot without a fight.
That is not radical. That is right.
For too long, people have looked at a map of this state, seen a sea of red, and decided the story was already written. They said Democrats in places like Aiken County don’t show up and don’t compete. This year we are answering that with candidates on every line of the ballot. Breaking the Republican supermajority in the House takes just six seats, and every contested race is a chance to get there.
Scripture tells us that faith without works is dead. We have had the faith for a long time. Now we are doing the works.
Here’s what I’m asking of you:
-
Vote early. In-person early voting is open now through Saturday, October 31. Find your county’s early voting centers at scvotes.gov.
-
Or vote on Election Day, Tuesday, November 3, from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
-
Bring your photo ID: an SC driver’s license, DMV ID card, or voter registration card with photo.
-
Bring three people with you. A neighbor, a coworker, someone from church. Make the plan together.
Flip the Future starts with your ballot. Next time is now.
