A MESSAGE FROM OUR SPIRITUAL DIRECTOR
REV. MELODY BAILEY
| | |
Spiritual Family,
Life is a Divine flow through each and every one of us. We truly are unique individualizations of Spirit. As we live our lives, Spirit expresses through us, as us and for us, and for this I am grateful.
This month, as I reflect from here in Canada on the amazing country that is Kenya, I am reminded of how much there is to celebrate.
In October, Kenya celebrated both Mazingira Day, focused on environmental awareness and service to the community, and Mashujaa Day, honouring heroes who contributed to Kenya’s independence. Two meaningful days that invite us to reflect on what they mean to us and to ask ourselves: “What is mine to do?”
This question connects beautifully with our Science of Mind teaching. If we truly are unique individualizations of Spirit, then each of us has something unique to contribute. We don't all have to do the same thing. One person may plant a tree, another may care for a child, teach, create employment, serve their community, protect the environment, or simply bring kindness and encouragement to those around them. Each can be an expression of Spirit.
Our world is a beautiful place and deserves the best care and attention we can provide, from reducing, reusing and recycling where we can, to planting trees and caring for our communities.
And as we honour the heroes of Kenya, we can also remember that each of us could be a hero in our own way not necessarily through extraordinary acts, but through responding to what life is asking of us.
As we ask ourselves, “What is mine to do?” we can add: what is mine to do for my family, my community, my environment and with the gifts Spirit has placed within me?
From Canada, I celebrate with the CSL Kenya community the beauty, strength and possibility that is Kenya. May we each listen deeply enough to recognize what is ours to do and then allow Spirit to express through us.
With blessings,
One Spirit, One World, One People.

A Divine Appointment by the Roadside
by Paul Kinuthia, RScp
Ministerial Student at the
School of Spiritual Leadership Kenya
Photo: Paul with Rev. Barb Samuel
Recently, on my way home, something unexpected happened.
I was driving my manual car when, suddenly, the gears jammed. Fortunately, I managed to find a small space beside the road and safely pull over. I looked around and noticed someone washing cars nearby. I approached him and asked if he knew where I could find a mechanic.
He immediately stopped washing the car, dried his hands, took out his phone, and made a call. I was struck by his willingness to help. As it turned out, the mechanic was just about to board a matatu.
“I will wait for him,” I said.
As I was walking back, I noticed a man roasting maize across the road. I crossed the road and bought some roasted maize. As I stood there, happily chewing my maize, the vendor looked at me and said, “You are very lucky. Your car breaking down during the day is a blessing. This is not a safe place at night.”
His words made me pause. I found myself doing a spiritual mind treatment right there beside the road, affirming what I know to be true: I am divinely guided and divinely protected, irrespective of place or time.
I shared this truth with him as I continued enjoying my maize.
And then something fascinating happened. It was almost as though he had been waiting for someone to validate something he already knew within himself. He began sharing his own story.
He told me that at the exact spot where we were standing, a vehicle had once veered off the road and killed a pedestrian. He was there. Somehow, he emerged completely unscathed. Then came the most frightening part.
Rumours spread that he had died in the accident.
When his pregnant wife heard the news, she fainted and had to be rushed to hospital. When he received the news, he rushed to the hospital himself.
Imagine the scene when the man everyone had reported dead walked into the hospital alive! His wife almost fainted a second time.
He was glowing as he shared the moment, saying that they hugged for a long time.
People later advised him to move away from that spot. But his response was simple: “I am divinely protected.” Then he said something that has stayed with me: “When it is time for us to die, we seek out death; death doesn't come looking for us.”
And then he gave me an example that was both profound and, in a strange way, almost humorous. He said, “You hear someone has been killed by a train…”
A TRAIN! Of all things! A train is noisy. It announces itself. It has lights. It has horns. It shakes the ground. It is hardly something that quietly sneaks up on you. And yet, somehow, someone can still find themselves in the path of a train.
I smiled, but his words made me think deeply. Perhaps his message wasn't really about tempting fate or ignoring danger. It was about his deep conviction that there is something greater at work in our lives.
For me, the lesson was not that we should become careless or stop taking precautions. Quite the opposite. We use our intelligence. We exercise wisdom. We take reasonable care. But underneath all of that, we can live from a deeper consciousness: I am not alone. I am guided. I am protected.
The Presence is always with me.
And suddenly, my broken-down car didn't seem like an inconvenience anymore. It felt like a divine appointment. Two strangers. A broken-down car. A roasted maize.
A dangerous roadside. A mechanic on the way. And a conversation about Divine Protection. Coincidence? Perhaps. Divine Order? I choose to see it that way.
As I sat there talking and chewing my maize, something else struck me.
It was almost as though time had stopped. I wasn't looking at my watch. I wasn't conscious of how long I had been there. I was simply present in the moment. And before I knew it, time had moved on.
How I eventually got home is a story for another day. 😊
For today, I am simply grateful for the reminder:
I am divinely guided and divinely protected,
wherever I am and whatever I am doing.

Before joining CSL I was becoming convinced of what my family was telling me, that I was losing my mind. Now I'm healed and liberated, facing life with acceptance and gratitude."
