A publication by Gloucester's Department of Community Engagement and Public Information

You can expect to get a letter soon from our Public Utilities Department about a new EPA project. Utilities teams across the United States are creating water line inventories to find and reduce lead in drinking water. This project will cover public and private water service lines in Gloucester.

Here are the fast facts:

Our initial inventory identified what pipes were likely to be made of, based on the year contractors built each building.

Many lines are currently labeled "unknown," but Public Utilities is actively verifying what those lines are made of. You’ll only get a letter if you have one of these “unknown” lines.

So far, we haven't found any lead materials in our water distribution system. The letter will explain how you can help identify the privately-owned section of your water pipes.

Private service lines for pre-1988 buildings are at greater risk of containing lead.

From VDOT Fredericksburg District: There will be signal changes at the Crewe Road/Rt. 17 intersection!

Due to a significant increase in accidents since the Flashing Yellow Arrow (FYA) was implemented, motorist traveling Northbound on Route 17 turning onto Crewe Road will now see a Solid Green or Red Arrow from 7:30 AM until 7:30 PM daily.

The FYA will be in operation during the 7:30 PM to 7:30 AM timeframe only.

If we were to map out all the work our Geographic Information System team does in a day, we'd be lost - literally and metaphorically!

Our small but dynamic team of Geo Experts has created a wealth of maps, web applications and phone apps to make life in Gloucester more organized.

You've got them to thank for:

-Defining County boundaries

-Maintaining data on parcels, addresses, roads and buildings

-Creating a disaster response website for emergencies

-Managing the GIS web map

 -Building the Beaverdam Trails App

The list goes on, as long as my arm. As winter sets in, we're particularly excited about their GloUp Holiday Lights Map!

Happy #GISday2024

**IMPORTANT UPDATE: We are hearing reports from some other localities that scammers are impersonating public utilities workers wanting to take water samples related to the EPA project below.

It's important to note that Gloucester County Public Utilities staff members will ALWAYS be identifiable by County ID Badge, uniform, and vehicle. If you are ever unsure, please call the Utilities Office to verify at 804-693-4044. We do have certain homes we are required to get lead and copper samples from, but if someone isn’t home, we leave the sample bottles and instructions at the door – and there is never a charge for this.**

Upcoming Events from the Gloucester Boys & Girls Club

As we approach the holidays, we are reminded that this is a season of giving. At the Boys & Girls Club, we are focused on making this time of year meaningful for our kids, their families, and our entire community. We are so grateful for the continued support of our parents and community partners. Together, we can make this a time of kindness, generosity, and community strength. These events not only help those in need, but they also teach our club kids the invaluable lessons of giving back, compassion, and making a difference.

Here’s what’s coming up this December:

1. Toys for Tots – Last Day to Donate: December 11th

The Toys for Tots campaign, run by the U.S. Marines, is going on now, and we need YOUR help! This amazing initiative benefits children in need, bringing holiday joy to those who might otherwise go without. Our goal is to overflow the donation box located in the front lobby, and we are asking that each family donate at least one new, unwrapped toy. Every donation makes a huge impact—let’s work together to brighten the holidays for these kids and spread some holiday spirit! Please note, the last day to donate is December 11th.

2. Angel Tree Christmas Party – December 12th

We are excited to announce the Angel Tree Christmas Party for select club members on December 12th at the Canon Corporation offices in Newport News! For those who have been selected, we will be providing transportation via bus, departing at 4:30 PM and returning at 7:00 PM. If your child is one of the lucky members chosen, please be sure to pick up a permission slip at the front desk. These must be signed and returned by the end of next week to secure your child’s spot.

3. Canned Food Drive – Now through December 19th

Our Torch Club is leading the charge with a Canned Food Drive, and we are calling on all families to help us stock the shelves of the Bread 4 Life Food Pantry. Please bring non-perishable food items to donate between now and December 19th. This drive is a wonderful way to give back to the community and support those in need during the holiday season. Let’s come together and make a difference!

4. Cookies with Santa and Mrs. Claus – December 19th, 4:00 PM to 5:00 PM

Get ready for a magical holiday tradition! Join us for Cookies with Santa and Mrs. Claus on December 19th from 4:00 PM to 5:00 PM. This event is a fun-filled way for the kids to meet Santa and Mrs. Claus, share their wishes, and enjoy a sweet treat. We can’t wait to see everyone there and spread some holiday cheer!
