FAITH that Works
“Not many of you should become teachers, my brothers, for you know that we who teach will be judged with greater strictness. 2 For we all stumble in many ways. And if anyone does not stumble in what he says, he is a perfect man, able also to bridle his whole body. 3 If we put bits into the mouths of horses so that they obey us, we guide their whole bodies as well. 4 Look at the ships also: though they are so large and are driven by strong winds, they are guided by a very small rudder wherever the will of the pilot directs. 5 So also the tongue is a small member, yet it boasts of great things.
How great a forest is set ablaze by such a small fire! 6 And the tongue is a fire, a world of unrighteousness. The tongue is set among our members, staining the whole body, setting on fire the entire course of life, and set on fire by hell. 7 For every kind of beast and bird, of reptile and sea creature, can be tamed and has been tamed by mankind, 8 but no human being can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison. 9 With it we bless our Lord and Father, and with it we curse people who are made in the likeness of God. 10 From the same mouth come blessing and cursing. My brothers, these things ought not to be so. 11 Does a spring pour forth from the same opening both fresh and salt water? 12 Can a fig tree, my brothers, bear olives, or a grapevine produce figs? Neither can a salt pond yield fresh water.” James 3:1-12 ESV
What do we need to know about our mouth/tongue?
1. It is _______________________. (vs. 3-4)
2. It ______________________ everything. (vs. 5-8)
3. It is ________________________ of the heart. (vs. 9-12)
Only God can transform a heart which will impact our tongue!
Game Plan This Week:
- Review the sermon
o What were the main points?
o What points were most meaningful to you?
- Study/discuss the text
o From James 3:1-8, what does your tongue reveal about your heart?
o How does thinking about our use of words cause you to adore Jesus even more for the way he used his words?
- Break into smaller groups and discuss these items:
o What did you find most challenging about these verses?
o Is there a way you have used your tongue, perhaps recently or years ago, that you need to repent of and seek someone’s forgiveness for? How will you go about doing that?
o How do you want the group to be praying for you this week?
- This week make a commitment to sit down often with God and discuss your tongue.
o Contemplate on this question: Where or around who do I need to correct how I am using my tongue?
o How does this passage change your prayer life?
o Continue to build on the daily habit of prayer this week.

Lottie Moon Mission:
Lottie Moon was a Southern Baptist Missionary to China in 1885-1912. She was instrumental in the creation of the Women's Missionary Union, where today there are over a million members. This said, we are doing our annual fundraising and this year, our goal is $7500.00. I know that we can do this church. These funds go (100%) to help missionaries all over the world. Please enjoy this quick video for information. If you are writing a check, please specify in the memo line it is for Lottie Moon.

If you have any old crutches or walkers, please bring them to donate.

Church Ministry: Olin & Park Hill Thanksgiving update
The plan is to bring all prepared food to COG on Thanksgiving (11/26) between 11:00 am and 11:20 am. A group will assemble "to-go" style meal packages to be taken to the Olin and Park Hill. We have created an online sign-up for all needed items.
To help with the process, please bring all food in disposable containers. We are asking you to prepare enough food to serve 10 people per item that you sign up for. You can sign up to bring as many items as you wish. For example, if you wish to make enough stuffing for 20 servings, sign up for two stuffing spots. If you want to make mashed potatoes for 10 servings and gravy for 10 servings, sign up for one of each spot. Click the link to sign up. Sign-Up Here
