HAPPY THANKSGIVING ORCAS ISLAND

SHOP THE ROCK AND YOUR MONEY BUILDS COMMUNITY

One of the incredible things about our island is the real sense of community that abounds here. There must be many places that think they have a strong community identity, but there's something about living on a rock in the middle of the Salish Sea that sets us apart (literally, of course, but you get the idea).

We here at the Orcas Chamber would like to challenge your thinking about how to support your community by asking you to commit to shopping locally as much as possible this coming year. Before you go online, before you make that ferry reservation, think: but first, Orcas!! So we're starting a full-tilt Shop the Rock campaign this holiday season. And get this: you can win some big, big prizes!

As I have been known to say, there is no difference between community and commerce on Orcas. Every single one of our shops and restaurants and service providers and farms is owned and operated by a neighbor, friend, or family member. These businesses give back to the community every single day. They are often the source of sponsorship and donations for the arts, non-profit organizations, and community events year in and year out. When you support them, you are supporting us all.

Next week you'll see the graphic above in shops and restaurants all over the island. In each shop where it is displayed you can get an Orcas Island Holiday Shopping Passport. Fill your passport between November 29 and December 18 at enough local shops and you'll be entered into a raffle for some incredible stuff, including gift cards at Island Market worth up to $1,500 and a veritable slew of gifts from local merchants.

SHOP THE ROCK PASSPORT

HOW TO PLAY AND WIN!

The rules are simple. For every purchase over $25 at a participating merchant, you get a sticker. Fill your passport with five stickers and you'll be entered to win one of three incredible raffle prizes. Get a sticker from all four areas of the island (Eastsound, Deer harbor, Olga/Doe Bay, and Orcas Village/Ferry Landing) and you get a second entry!

First prize basket is worth $1250 dollars and includes a $750 Island Market Gift Card!

Second prize basket is worth $750 and includes a $500 Island Market Gift Card!

Third prize basket is worth $500 and includes a $250 Island Market Gift Card!

Contest runs from Small Business Saturday, November 30, thru December 18 and winners will be announced in the December 19 newsletter.

Now get out there and do right by our small business community!

ORCAS ISLAND ARTWORKS

DECEMBER FEATURED ARTIST

Orcas Island Artworks

11 Point Lawrence Rd.

Daily 10-4pm thru December 30

Metal Artist, Steve Gropp, has been working with his hands and making some kind of art from very early on in his life. His formal education focused primarily on design through the mediums of drawing, painting, printmaking, carving and ceramics.

His artistic aesthetic is deeply informed by many years and many thousands of miles traveling on foot or by small boat on the wild edges of the North American continent, immersed in the landscapes of coastline, mountains and deserts and the elemental forces that shape them.

For the past thirty years, Steve has been exploring the practical and sculptural possibilities of the hot forging process in metal. This ancient blacksmiths craft uses the transformative power of heat and the force of the hammer's blow to bend and shape steel to bring one's vision to reality.

The pieces Steve is displaying for this month's feature include new copper and steel work, as well as a number of forged door knockers, and an array of candle holders to hopefully bring some light to this darkest of seasons.

Steve's work will be installed and ready for viewing THIS Saturday, November 30. Don't forget to make a stop and earn a sticker for your holiday shopping passport!

The Artworks is open daily from 10:00 - 4:00 through December 30th. Closing for a short winter break during January and part of February.

CHAMBER OF COMMERCE VISITOR INFORMATION CENTER

The Orcas Island Chamber of Commerce Visitor Information Center is excited to host works by Susan Slapin. These incredible oil and pastels are both colorful and delightful while encouraging inner stillness.

BARBARA EVANS FEATURED ARTIST AT THE LIBRARY

Orcas Public Library

500 Rose St.

Barbara is exhibiting her images of trees in a wide variety of media, including oils, pastels, graphite and needlepoint. She has taken the creative opportunity afforded by our many species of Island trees, seen in varying seasons, locations and light conditions.

Your copy should address 3 key questions: Who am I writing for (audience)? Why should they care (benefit)? What do I want them to do (call-to-action)?

Create a great offer by adding words like "free," "personalized," "complimentary," or "customized." A sense of urgency often helps readers take action, so consider inserting phrases like "for a limited time only" or "only 7 remaining!"

WaFd Bank

35 Main St.

WaFd Bank will be hosting a community food drive in collaboration with the Orcas Island Food Bank from December 2 thru December 20 at the branch on Main Street. Drop of your hearty food, including soup, herbs and spices, condiments, baking ingredients and coffee and tea or donate to the cause!

To honor our volunteers' commitment, OICC provides a stipend of $10 for each night signed up for in advance. On nights when the shelter is open, overnight volunteers will receive a stipend of $75.
