Happy Thanksgiving!
On the way to Jerusalem he was passing along between Samaria and Galilee. And as he entered a village, he was met by ten lepers, who stood at a distance and lifted up their voices, saying, “Jesus, Master, have mercy on us.” When he saw them, he said to them, “Go and show yourselves to the priests.” And as they went, they were cleansed. Then one of them, when he saw that he was healed, turned back, praising God with a loud voice; and he fell on his face at Jesus' feet, giving him thanks. Now he was a Samaritan. Then Jesus answered, “Were not ten cleansed? Where are the nine? Was no one found to return and give praise to God except this foreigner?” And he said to him, “Rise and go your way; your faith has made you well. (Luke 17:11-19)
It is interesting to note that these ten lepers understood the power and authority of Jesus. Their desire was for healing and they knew who to ask. This comes out in the text through their asking and through their immediate response of faith. “As they went, they were cleansed.” They didn’t wait around to see if a cleansing was happening, they simply trusted and did as Jesus commanded. They started looking for a priest to show themselves cleansed and “as they went, they were cleansed.”
In realizing his healing one of the ten “turned back, praising God with a loud voice; and he fell on his face at Jesus' feet, giving him thanks.” Did the other nine not realize they had been healed? That hardly seems likely. Their former companion, the one that returned to Jesus, was “praising God with a loud voice.” They must have heard him; they must have realized their own cleansing had occurred. We know they were cleansed from the text, but they must have known as well. One returned to the source while the other nine presumably continued on their way to find a priest. Who or what were they relying on? Either they were ungrateful, or they were so intent on following the requirements of the law that they missed the opportunity to “give praise to God” and left that to the foreigner.
Like the ten lepers in this parable I am often crying out to Jesus; crying out for mercy, deliverance, protection, healing. I am trusting that, like me, you know to whom we must cry out in our times of need and distress. I am also trusting that we share a similar faith in His ability to not only answer our prayers but to meet every need we face. What I am not always sure of is if I am more like the one who came back to thank God for what He has done or if I am more like the nine who go about their lives cleansed and healed with little or no thought toward thankfulness. The emphasis of this story is not the cleansing or healing but that only one of the ten lepers thanked God for what He had done. How often do I thank God for what He has done and is doing for me? How often do you thank God for what he has done and is doing for you?
This question is not meant to produce guilt or lead us to set goals about being more thankful. However, it is the perfect season and holiday to contemplate our thankfulness and perhaps reset who we are relying on and thankful toward, in the heavenly and earthly realm. I can not count the number of times I have prayed for any number of good things, seen answers to those requests and attributed it to anything other than God since it did not happen immediately. So, I do intend to be more aware of my requests, expecting and looking for God’s answers and being more intentional in thanking Him. All good things come from God (Psalm 16:2) and He is worthy of our praise, He is worthy of our worship and He is worthy of our Happy Giving of Thanks.
