From the Desk of Fr. Mike Nacius, Pastor
Many of us may be finishing off the last of our Thanksgiving day leftovers, calling loved ones across the miles and spending time on ZOOM this holiday weekend. With grateful hearts may we continue to turn to God who leads us in faith.

We continue to show love of God and love of neighbor in our lives these COVID days. The following reflection and prayer, titled, A Prayer for Putting on a Mask is one that I invite everyone to pray on their own, and with their families as we enter into an Advent season of waiting, of hope.

Creator, as I prepare to go into the world,
help me to see the sacrament
in the wearing of this cloth –
let it be “an outward sign
of an inward grace” –
a tangible and visible way
of living love for my neighbours,
as I love myself.

Christ, since my lips will be covered,
uncover my heart,
that people would see my smile
in the crinkles around my eyes.
Since my voice may be muffled,
help me to speak clearly,
not only with my words,
but with my actions.

Holy Spirit, as the elastic touches my ears,
remind me to listen carefully –
and full of care – to all those I meet.

May this simple piece of cloth be shield and banner,
and each breath that it holds,
be filled with your love.
In your Name and in that love,
I pray. May it be so. May it be so.
The above prayer was written by Reverend Richard Bott, United Church of Canada.

I was speaking with a friend who is a single parent raising her twin daughters, putting them through college. She shared with me the adjustments the girls have made as they complete their education this coming spring. She also shared how she was adjusting to all the protocols in place since past March. She chuckled, "Not going out much. I have more money in my bank.” I thought about her words and our conversation.

Like you, my life has been adjusted by all of the protocols in place and the limits that have hindered my activities, my trips and my travels. Like my friend, I realized I had more money in my bank account that would have been spent on normal and usual activities. Reflecting on that I realized I was able to increase my tithing and support to the Church of St. Mary this fall. I also will reflect on my donations to charities that I support at the end of the year.

I am very grateful for the parishioners that have been faithful in their support of the ministries and mission of St. Mary’s. It is reflected in care for their neighbor; care for those in need as well as in offertory contributions. During the times of the pandemic the weekly offertory collections have been under our average, under our budget. It is my prayer and my request that all parishioners would support the Church of St. Mary in the offertory collection this Advent.

Perhaps a year end gift to the parish is possible by you and your family. Perhaps increasing the offertory contribution will be something that your family is able to do. The generosity and goodness of parishioners comes through in many ways at the Church of St. Mary. May all of our parish, recognize the need not only to contribute and support personal and favorite charities but also to regularly offer support to the ministries and the mission of St. Mary’s in the Sunday offertory.

The Guild of St. Mary has once again been blessed by the goodness and support of our parishioners. Thanks to the members of the Guild and all who generously supported the Parish Sharing Tree this year, supporting our Sharing Parish Most Blessed Trinity.

Recently I was having a conversation with parishioners. They were asking questions about pre-arrangements for a funeral. “We aren‘t getting any younger Father Mike. We hope to be around for some time longer but just want to know some of the options we can include in our will and trust.” Some parishioners in addition to planning pre-arrangements for their funeral include the Church of St. Mary in their will. If you have any questions about how you can include your parish in your trust and will, please reach out to the Parish Business Office. May God bless all of our parishioners with health and a long life.

This Thursday, we will be offering an Advent Taize service. You are invited to pray with us, streaming in with the Church of St. Mary. Please see details for this Advent prayer service in today’s bulletin.

God bless you with a peaceful waiting heart this Advent.

  • Take a walk and drop your donation off at the Parish Office mailbox, if you arrive after business hours.
  • Also, transfers of appreciated securities allow you to make a gift without paying capital gains tax on your gains, thereby increasing both the amount of your gift as well as the amount of your charitable deduction. Gifts of appreciated securities can be designated for 100% deposit to our parish accounts.
If you are able please consider this option for your year-end giving as we face pressures from decreased offertory collections during the COVID shutdown. Please contact the Business Office and Rebecca Quackenbush at (847) 582-2502 or rquackenbush@churchofstmary.org

From the Parish Finance Council
November 2020

Dear Parishioners of the Church of St Mary,

The Church of St. Mary Parish Finance Council wants to thank all parishioners for their continued and generous support of the Church of St. Mary. Your financial generosity funds the ministries of the Parish, our Religious Education programs and our Parish School. All registered parishioners will be receiving a copy of the Annual Report for Fiscal Year 2020 in the mail later this month. An electronic copy of the report is available via the Parish website.

Covid-19 remains the largest challenge for our Parish as we navigate the fall of 2020 and look forward to 2021. This health crisis requires all of us to examine our resources and balance our charitable contributions. Your commitment to the Church of St. Mary enables us to continue to do the critical work of ministering to our Parish, ensuring a safe and enriching environment at our School, and assisting those in need not only at our sharing Parish, but throughout our community.

The financial reality for FY2020 saw a marked decrease in Church donations and continue at a 17% decrease under budget. The demands on all our financial resources are more urgent than ever. We are writing to ask you to consider your level of giving to the Parish. One of the simplest ways to do this is to consider participating in our safe electronic giving system, GiveCentral, to ensure your weekly support of the Church. With the participation and generosity of all parishioners, we will be able to continue to serve and support the ministries at the Parish.

Know that you can reach out to any member of the Parish Finance Council if you have questions. One of our objectives for the year is to increase the ways we communicate to the Parish, in addition to the Annual Report for Fiscal Year 2020.

May your celebrations with family of Thanksgiving and Christmas be healthy and joyous for all.
Respectively submitted.

St. Mary’s Parish Finance Council

GENERAL GUIDELINES
Below are a few guidelines for being in the Church. There are numerous signs around the exterior and interior of the Church to help facilitate these new patterns. Due to the limited capacity, number of parishioners and our reduced Mass schedule, we ask that you sign up for a weekend Mass every other week and one weekday Mass to allow others to be able to pray in the Church and celebrate Mass in person. If the day before, there are still open slots, you may sign up.

  • Church Entrance:  The south door, near the elevator, is the only entrance into the Church. Please form a line along the exterior south wall of the Church and a volunteer greeter will let you in.
  • Arrive On Time:  South Entrance doors will open 15 minutes prior to the start of Mass and it is strongly encouraged you arrive by the time the doors open as time is needed to Greet visitors and allow Ushers to seat you.
  • Entrance Doors Close:  South Entrance doors will close at the start of Mass to allow volunteers to attend Mass. Thank you for allowing yourself time to arrive.
  • Volunteers:  Parish volunteers will be on site to help direct and guide all of us as we begin to open and re-enter the Church.
  • Masks/Face Covering:  Mask or face coverings are required to be worn by all individuals at all times while in the Church building.
  • Hand Sanitizer:  Sanitize your hands as you enter the Church building.
  • Social Distance:  Maintain proper social distancing of 6 feet apart, unless you are with somebody who lives in the same household as you. There are floor markings to help facilitate this.
  • 100 Persons Maximum:  A maximum of 100 individuals (excluding the priest and other ministers) are allowed in the Church at one time. In inclement weather, personal vehicles would be a necessary shelter while waiting.
  • Church Exit:  The north doors onto the main plaza will be the only exit from the Church (unless you require use of the elevator).
  • Church East Entrance - Emergency Exit Only:  Please do not use the East doors onto the stairways for either entering or exiting.
  • Surface Sanitizing: All surfaces touched by persons are sanitized prior to the next opening of the Church.
  • Restrooms Unavailable:  For the safety of all, the restrooms will not be available, unless it's an emergency.
  • Registration Required:  Registration is required through SignUp Genius for Public Mass, Adoration, Baptisms, Weddings and Funerals. 85 slots will be available online and 15 slots will be available by calling the office for those who do not have access to technology.
  • SignUp Availability: SignUps for the next week's schedule will be available through SignUp Genius after 9:00am on Friday's. Registration is required for Public Mass & Prayer, Adoration, Weddings, Funerals and Baptisms. If you need assistance, please contact the Parish Center Office during normal business hours at receptionist@churchofstmary.org or call 847-234-0205. Leave a message and they will call you back.

VOLUNTEERS
We are requesting volunteers to assist and volunteer guidelines will be sent to all volunteers when they SignUp for a Church of St. Mary Volunteer SignUP shift:

Volunteer Tasks:
  • Greeters will assist in managing the flow of congregants as they enter the church, participate in the liturgy/sacrament, and exit the church.
  • Team members will combine some of the functions of an usher, such as directing participants to appropriate seating/waiting areas, but will include additional responsibilities, including, but not limited to, making sure attendees use hand sanitizer upon entering, are wearing a mask, and are reminded not to enter if ill.
  • Given the circumstances, greeters will need to be tactful and firm paying careful attention to all people on-site. To support parish greeter teams, rudimentary training tips on handling difficult situations will be provided.
  • Volunteers will ensure that: all supplies needed for each sacramental celebration/gathering are ready for use, entrances and exits are marked and propped physically open prior to attendees' arrival/departure, and windows are opened.
  • Volunteers will help maintain and sanitize essential and trafficked areas of the church after the church has been used. Masks and gloves will be provided, if necessary, in addition to approved cleaning/disinfecting supplies.

May God grant you peace and comfort in this time.
November 29, 2020: Gospel Reflection for The First Sunday of Advent
Happy New Year! Starting this Sunday we being a new liturgical year! Advent is a time for new beginnings and anxiously awaiting not only the birth of Jesus, the Messiah, to the Israelites but we as Christians anxiously await the second coming of Jesus. Most of our first readings will come from Isaiah and the second and third Sundays of Advent we always hear of or from John the Baptist.

Sunday’s first reading as mentioned in the prior paragraph is from Isaiah, third Isaiah to be specific. The Jews who were forced out of the southern kingdom of Judah to live in Babylon have been released to go back home and rebuild. Isaiah sadly ponders why God let’s people stray from covenantal living and allows their hearts to grow hard. This is quite reminiscent of when the Jews fled Egypt. It is a cyclical pattern that we still find ourselves in today. We sin, we grow distant from God, we repent and God, ever merciful and loving, re-establishes the covenant with us once again. We could ask ourselves, why do we keep making these mistakes and thank goodness God is so ever loving & merciful to always take us back! We make mistakes because that is part of the human experience. However, God doesn’t force us to love him. We have free will which means we have to want to return to God’s love and live the will of God. Maybe the question could be rephrased as why don’t we reflect upon our actions and stop ourselves as soon as we sense we are straying? I suspect that having a strong prayer life is our way of doing just that.
Sunday’s gospel is short but clear, we need to watch for when Jesus will come again. Similar to the imagery we have had in the past few weeks, a man leaves his estate to go traveling and leaves his servants in charge to carry on his work. Those servants have a choice, to continue the work of the lord of the house or to slack off. We don’t know what they decide to do; we know that they and us must watch for when the Master returns. It sounds easy enough but as we saw in the first reading it is all too easy to let life just happen and to forget to remain grounded in what God wants for us, not what we want for ourselves.

An easy way to picture what the gospel this Sunday is telling us is to think about one of the well-used movie tropes where the parents leave the kids to go away for the weekend. We all know what’s going to happen, as soon as the parents leave, the children go about being wild and even throw a party. As the party is in full swing, the parents come home early and the kids are caught in the act of not doing what they should have been doing. That is this Sunday’s gospel. Are we living our lives as God would want or how we want? Ideally those two paths would be the same. Advent is a time for us to reflect how we can align ourselves to what God wills for us; to prepare ourselves for the coming of the Lord.

Please join us for an Advent Taizé Prayer Service on Thursday, December 3 at 7:30 pm in the Church. Experience traditional Taizé music, reflection and silence to prepare your heart for Advent. Please sign up in advance through SignUp Genius.

MARY: WOMAN OF GREAT COURAGE AND CHARACTER

Mary, the mother of Jesus, commonly referred to as Mary, Mother of God, Saint Mary, Virgin Mary and Blessed Virgin Mary, is one of the most admired figures in Scripture and considered by many to be the greatest of all Christian saints. She was a willing servant who trusted God and obeyed His call. While her life held great honor, her calling also required great suffering. Though there was joy in motherhood, there was great pain in the privilege of being the mother of the Messiah. Despite these things, she responded to God with great obedience and submission to His plan. Her life never robbed Jesus of His glory, for her mission was to witness the glory of the Son of God. She was a person of discipleship and faith, and the first true follower of Jesus.

PRESENTER: CAITLYN TRADER

The first painting is The Immaculate Conception and Angels (1560-1563) by Francesco De'Rossi (Salviati). The second painting, The Annunciation, was recently discovered on Archdiocesan grounds and may be of at least 16th century Italian origin. Both paintings will illumine the Advent/Christmas season. Ways to Volunteer
The Soup Kitchen is in need of clean plastic grocery-type bags to use in distributing our take-out meals. We use an estimated 900-1000 per week, and purchasing them uses funds which could be better spent on food stuffs. We would appreciate anyone who can save their plastic bags and donate them for reuse. You can call Ellen Tierney at (847) 295-4649; or e-mail ellenkelly@comcast.net for more information or special pickup arrangements. Thank you for your help.

Stewardship
“Take heed, watch and pray; for you do not know when the time will come.”
          MARK 13:33

We all take things for granted. In particular, we take time for granted. Our lives are so busy, many of us are plan-ning our time -our days, weeks, months, even years in advance. Remember, our time on earth is a gift. None of us knows how long we will be here. Start today and begin thanking God for each and every day. Take time in silence, every day, and listen to what God is saying to you.
