A Thanksgiving Message from Fr. Pierre-Henry

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ,

We are going to celebrate Thanksgiving in a very unusual way this year, in the midst of this Covid-19 pandemic, as many of us will not be able to gather with friends and family. However, I hope we will all take the time to give thanks to the Lord for the many blessings we have received. Sometimes it’s not easy to give thanks when everything seems dark, difficult, or when we are struggling with health and or financial issues. As Christians, we believe in the Incarnation of God in Jesus, who is also called Emmanuel - God with us. We know that even in our darkest moments the Lord is present in our lives and acting in the world. Is not that reason enough to stop, pause, ponder, and give thanks to the Lord from whom all blessings flow?

I invite you, on Thanksgiving Day, to take the time to turn to the Lord, maybe you would use this General Thanksgiving found on page 836 of the BCP. I confess that I really like it!

Accept, O Lord, our thanks and praise for all that you have done for us. We thank you for the splendor of the whole creation, for the beauty of this world, for the wonder of life, and for the mystery of love.

We thank you for the blessing of family and friends, and for the loving care which surrounds us on every side.

We thank you for setting us at tasks which demand our best efforts, and for leading us to accomplishments which satisfy and delight us.

We thank you also for those disappointments and failures that lead us to acknowledge our dependence on you alone.

Above all, we thank you for your Son Jesus Christ; for the truth of his Word and the example of his life; for his steadfast obedience, by which he overcame temptation; for his dying, through which he overcame death; and for his rising to life again, in which we are raised to the life of your kingdom.

Grant us the gift of your Spirit, that we may know Christ and make him known; and through him, at all times and in all places, may give thanks to you in all things. Amen.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Here are some great video links. The first two relate to Advent
and the second two relate to Thanksgiving.

A Nice Thanksgiving Story

Tuesday morning I was at the dental office having a root canal! I told the dental assistant that I was on my way to church and she asked me “What Church?” When I told her St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, she said that the Food Pantry there had been a great blessing to her when she was unemployed. She said that she not only received food during her time of need, but that the volunteers prayed with her. She felt that the prayers were powerful and is thankful that she now has a job at the endodontist office. Just one example of the work of the Holy Spirit in one of our very important ministries!
Happy Thanksgiving to all,
Don McKellar,
Junior Warden

2021 Pledge Campaign Update

As of November 25, we have received 89 pledges for a total of $324,186. Thank you for those of you who have submitted your pledge card! We feel such gratitude as each card arrives.

The pledge card is available on our website's home page: look for the green button! For your convenience, click here to submit your 2021 pledge to St. Luke's. We also want to remind you of the secure, confidential email address you may also use to submit your pledge for 2021: pledge@slecp.org.

As George Chesney, Senior Warden, shared in his letter of a couple of weeks ago, "Thank you for being a part of St. Luke’s and for your faithful generous gifts to our annual campaign and ongoing ministries and outreach."

An Advent Book Study
“The tale of Ebenezer Scrooge was first published in 1843. Charles Dickens originally wrote A CHRISTMAS CAROL to revive the joyful traditions of Christmas and the celebration of the yuletide, since Cromwell’s Puritan revolution in England had prohibited any rites or practices deemed “pagan.” The story of the redemption of Ebenezer Scrooge is a meaningful story for all people of faith as the themes encompassed within the story include hope, redemption, transformation, the work of the Spirit, and the Christian life. Each of the 4 sections (or staves, in keeping with the carol/song metaphor) includes a well-known Christmas carol, Opening and Closing prayer, Scripture reading, and Discussion prompts. All of these staves coincide with the four weeks of Advent!”

The book, A CHRISTMAS CAROL, will be studied over 3 Wednesdays beginning December 2 and continuing December 9 and 16
and Tuesday, December 22 via ZOOM. The start time is 6:30pm for approximately 1 hour. There are limited copies available so it is necessary to sign up online or by calling Brenda Schwartz at 928.379.1441 or Lauree Birchmeier at the church 928-778-4499. There will be one book per registered household at a cost of $10.00. We will need your name and Email address (for ZOOM) along with your payment. Deadline for sign-up is November 24 (in case we need to order more books) Books can be picked up on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, 9-12 noon.

Education for Ministry
Is it right for you?
Every baptized person is called to ministry. The EfM program, offered as an education-at-a-distance course by the School of Theology at the University of the South at Sewanee, TN, provides Episcopalians and others with the education to carry out that ministry. This diocese is a sponsoring diocese of the EfM program.

As the Church continues to emphasize the importance of lay ministries, many people feel that they need a theological education that supports their faith and teaches them to express that faith in day-to-day events. EfM is one way for them to gain that knowledge.

EfM is a 4-year course, covering the basic subjects of a theological education: the Hebrew scripture, New Testament, Church history and the study of theological movements in the church. Participants register for one year at a time, meeting weekly in a seminar of 6-12 students with trained mentors. We meet on Thursday evenings from 5:30 – 8:00. (beginning in mid-September). Right now with the Covid issue we will be using Zoom. We did that to finish up in the spring and it worked quite well.

There are weekly assignments to study with the help of resource guides. All years meet together, which leads to very meaningful discussions. (We have 5 participants returning next year for years 2-4.) We really need some 1st year students to round things out!

A recent Tucson graduate had this to say – “EfM is a safe, supportive place to learn, explore new ideas, and wrestle with the big questions in the company of others who are doing the same. You will be welcomed, encouraged, and challenged as you do the readings and participate in weekly discussions. The friendships developed along the way are truly special. A wild ride, but worth every inch!”
If you think EfM might be for you,

As some of you may have read in the Daily Courier recently, Yavapai County Community Health Services is conducting a survey to assess how many individuals would be interested in receiving a COVID-19 vaccine when one becomes available. The link is below.
Don't Spend Christmas Alone Update!
Dear Members of St Luke's,
Due to the COVID-19, and the Diocese restrictions, The Annual Don't Spend Christmas Alone Dinner will not be held this year.
St Luke's needs to follow the guidelines for the safety and wellbeing of our entire congregation and the communities this wonderful tradition has served .
A small gift will be delivered to those homebound or unable to attend worship at this time, will also be given to those in attendance at our Christmas services; which can be picked up following service in the Gathering Hall. This remembrance will serve as a small token of our fellowship and appreciation until we can gather for Don' t Spend
Christmas Alone again next year.
As Father Pierre-Henry has expressed, "we need to be even more cautious than ever, for us, our loved ones and our neighbors".
Holiday blessings to you and your families
