Honoring Veterans on November 11
On Thursday, we observe Veterans Day, a national holiday to honor the 19 million veterans in the United States and to show our country's appreciation for the courage and patriotism of everyone who has served in the military. To our Vets, thank you for your service.

When first celebrated as Armistice Day, the day marked the end of World War I, formally recognized on the “11th hour, of the 11th day, of the 11th month” in 1918.

The Redwood City Downtown Lions Club is hosting a Veterans Day Celebration on November 11, 10 a.m. - 12 p.m. at Courthouse Square. Join us!

City Hall and the administrative offices of the Police, Fire, and Public Works Services Departments and all libraries will be closed on November 11 in observance of the Veterans Day holiday. Although administrative offices will be closed, emergency services will continue to operate.
Join us to Celebrate Dia de Los Muertos on Sunday, November 7 at Courthouse Square
Redwood City Courthouse Square will be transformed into a stage, where musicians, dancers, artists, family altars are on display; sugar skulls, marigolds, and more will decorate the Square, bringing it to life. Catrinas will be walking around greeting visitors and a procession will walk through downtown Redwood City. Traditional foods and vendor booths will line the streets. Inside of the San Mateo County History Museum is a FREE exhibition of altars, as well as free arts and crafts for kids where they can create traditional art and enjoy hands-on activities

Visit Casa Circulo Cultural's website here for more info!

Underpass Connecting Bair Island to Downtown Grand Opening on November 10 at 2pm
On Wednesday, November 10 at 2 p.m., the City will host a ribbon-cutting to commemorate the opening of the U.S. Highway 101 Pedestrian Undercrossing, connecting the bike path along Bair Island Road with the bike lanes on Main Street via a new undercrossing beneath the freeway and adjacent to Redwood Creek. Improvements include providing an accessible pathway that connects the Bair Island neighborhood to the Downtown and provides another emergency access route to the Bair Island neighborhood.

Over the past decade, housing development in the bayfront areas east of U.S. Highway 101 have attracted many new residents to the City and have created an increased demand for improved pedestrian and bicycle connections in the area. Creating a physical link between the bayfront areas and downtown has been a long-term planning goal of the City and we hope you can join us to celebrate this exciting new way of connecting our community!

Learn more about the project here.
Got Hazardous Waste? FREE Disposal Event on November 13
The Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) Program is hosting a drop-off event in Redwood City on Saturday, November 13, 2021. Accepted items include cleaning products; fertilizers and garden chemicals; pesticides, herbicides and rodenticides; solvents; flammable liquids; fluorescent lights (compact and tubes), paint thinner, acids/bases, aerosol cans, automotive supplies (car batteries, motor oil, oil filters, antifreeze, brake fluid), inks, and photo chemicals. All waste collected is reused, recycled, or stabilized for proper disposal to achieve zero waste and prevent any items from going to the landfill and contaminating our water and soil. No radioactive, explosive, or medical waste.

To participate, you MUST schedule an appointment at San Mateo County’s HHW Program: smchealth.org/hhw, or by calling (650) 372-6200. The event location will be disclosed once your appointment is confirmed. Limit 10 gallons or 50 pounds per appointment (per car load). No commercial waste is allowed.

Residents unable to attend this event can still dispose of household hazardous waste for free at San Mateo County’s permanent HHW facility Thursdays-Saturdays (except major holiday weekends). You must make an appointment at smchealth.org/hhw or call (650) 372-6200. Recycling/safe disposal of paint, fluorescent lights, household batteries, and used motor oil/filter does not need an appointment. Go to smchealth.org/hhw for drop-off sites.
Help Shape the Vision for an Arts Center, Take the Survey Today!
ARTS RWC, an arts roundtable of artists, arts advocates, arts organizations and civic leaders in Redwood City, and its growing list of supporters, is working on a powerful vision for a new arts center, the Center for Creativity. The hope is to provide access to the arts to our city and the Peninsula at large.

Your entire family can help to move it closer to reality in two easy ways!

  1. Take our survey! Everyone in the family has an opportunity to give input about community needs and desires. There are even specific surveys for kids and teens to make sure their voices are heard!
  2. Share! Reach out to your friends, family, and colleagues who live, work, learn, and play on the Peninsula and ask them to take the survey also.

Survey results will be used to create a formal feasibility study that will go deeper evaluating possible locations, as well as enlisting the support of City and County government for the vision. Survey collection ends November 12.

Thank you in advance for your support!
101 Express Lanes Opening Soon!
Follow the Signs to Find Out Which Vehicles Can Use the Lanes and When
The Express Lanes from the San Mateo County/Santa Clara County line to Whipple Avenue in Redwood City will open soon. Testing of tolling equipment is currently taking place in preparation for the Express Lanes to open, which are designed to move more people through the corridor while prioritizing carpools.

Travelers in this section of U.S. 101 may notice the change in lane striping and pavement markings in the existing high-occupancy vehicle (HOV) lanes. The existing stripe is being replaced with a skip stripe and the existing diamond shape is being replaced with the letters “EXPRS LANE”.
“Under Construction” banners on the new overhead variable toll message signs are being replaced with “Toll Testing” banners. See Exhibit 2 for an example.

During toll equipment testing, the lanes will continue to operate as HOV lanes, allowing the lanes to be used by vehicles with two or more people, from Monday to Friday, between the hours of 5 AM – 9 AM and 3 PM – 7 PM. This includes all carpools and Employer Shuttle Providers. The lanes are open to all vehicles during all other times. There will be no charge for the use of the lanes UNTIL the Express Lanes are open, which will be signified by the removal of the “TOLL TESTING” banners. Follow the signs! Signage on the road is the best place to find out which vehicles can use the lanes and when.

Once the Express Lanes open, they will be free for vehicles with 3 or more people, half price for vehicles with two people and some clean air vehicles, and available for a toll to vehicles with one person. The Express Lanes in this section of U.S. 101 will connect to the Express Lanes being constructed in Santa Clara County.

"Playland” Fun and Games Aims to Take Sting Out of Vaccination Clinic for Children Ages 5 to 11
San Mateo County Health is prioritizing efforts to make vaccination accessible for 5-11 year-olds throughout the county. After the federal and state approvals this week, we will offer a child-focused walk-up vaccination clinic at the San Mateo County Event Center on Saturday, November 6th, with additional centrally located offerings to be determined by demand. Appointments are required for Saturday’s pediatric clinic at the Event Center and will be available soon on MyTurn.
COVID-19 Testing
Testing remains an important strategy in continuing to reduce the spread of the disease and to protect individuals who have not been vaccinated. Testing is available for all ages, including young children and infants, and all testing sites now use more comfortable testing methods by swabbing the front part of the nose or mouth.

People who are vaccinated or unvaccinated should get tested if they have symptoms of COVID-19. Unvaccinated persons should get tested if they have had close contact with someone with COVID-19 or have concerns about being infected or exposed.

See smcgov.org/testing for more information about locations and schedules. In addition to these sites, testing is also available from health care providers and other community organizations.
How to Obtain Your Electronic Vaccine Record
Did you know the state of California has provided an online portal to display your electronic vaccination record? The vaccine records website is a trusted source to verify a resident's vaccination status and it is more secure than a paper document that can be lost or forged. Speaking of which, if you lost your original paper vaccine card and need a new one, you can print the digital record from the website!

Still need to get vaccinated? Head over to https://myturn.ca.gov/ to check for walk-in sites near you and to book your FREE vaccine.
