Upon her death, Maria Allen deeded her home and property to her five children. The Allen Ranch in Black Forest, as well as her late father’s estate in Philadelphia were given to her four sons. Maria gave one thousand dollars to each of her grandchildren, daughters in law and son in law. The Allen staff and servants were given five hundred dollars each.
Maria’s will contained pages of instructions as to who should receive her personal belongings. Despite many beneficiaries named to receive her possessions, there were still numerous belongings to be divided. The “grand” chairs in the entry way and other areas of the present-day Allen House were the 12 dining room chairs from Maria’s estate.
At the time of her death in 1950, Colorado Springs had a population of about 50,000. The Allen children, now grown, decided to subdivide the Broadmoor property and sell off individual land parcels. (Fortunately, this threat to our future did not come to fruition.) The asking price for Cheyenne House, $250,000. Today, in the year 2023, asking price would be $3,144,036.01.
