FISH WAR
| |
The Madrona Room
Thursday, November 7 - doors at 5pm
Fish War is an Official Selection in the Seattle International Film Festival and a powerful exploration of Native American fishing rights and sovereignty in the Pacific Northwest.
It celebrates the 50th anniversary of the landmark Boldt Decision, a pivotal Supreme Court ruling that affirmed the fishing rights of Washington’s Treaty Tribes and strengthened Tribal Sovereignty. Fish War tells the tumultuous story that led up to that ruling and follows the story up to modern day, where salmon face a still-uncertain future.
The film is coming to the San Juan Islands thanks to a group of local organizations that includes the Northwest Indian Fisheries Commission, Friends of the San Juan Islands, SeaDoc Society, Source Paper, the Lopez Island Historical Museum.

NATIVE BEES & HOVERFLIES IN OUR GARDENS
A PRESENTATION BY RUSSEL BARSH
| |
Orcas Center (live Zoom available)
Wednesday, November 13 at 10am
Russel Barsh pursued careers in university teaching and international diplomacy before returning to the islands more than 20 years ago as the founding director of Kwiaht, a nonprofit conservation biology laboratory that studies island ecosystems, marine and terrestrial, and works with public and private landowners to protect our most unusual habitats and species. He is best known for his research on the food web that sustains Chinook salmon and Orcas, but his interest in the ecology of the San Juan Islands includes extensive research about bats, ticks, and native bees and hoverflies. KWIAHT's summer surveys of 19 uninhabited small islands around San Juan County have added to his knowledge of our native pollinators, in particular the role of Cellophane bees, 'digger bees' and bumblebees in maintaining wildflowers on islands as small as a few hundred square feet.
Garden club presentations are free and open to the public.

Orcas Island has always been a haven for creativity, and now our middle school students got a firsthand look at the artistic talent that surrounds them. Brook Meinhardt with the Art for Orcas Kids (A*OK) program brought local artists into the classroom, inspiring the next generation of creators.
Brook Meinhardt kicked off the program with a session on portrait illustration. Inese Westcott helped students to explore their creativity with acrylic paints. Inese was also instrumental in helping organize the guest artists to share their work. Artist David Densmore introduced an exercise in negative space drawing using paper, charcoal and chairs, while Khristy Kim taught students to map animal faces to draw them, resulting in colorful portraits of local farm animals. Susie Shipman delved into the world of printmaking. The final session, led by Mandy Troxell, introduced students to the art of wool felting, providing a tactile 3-D artistic experience to create landscapes and creatures.
Look for the Art for Orcas Kids grant request in the upcoming GiveOrcas Holiday Campaign this December 3-12th. For more information or to volunteer for Art for Orcas Kids please contact the program at aokartfororcaskids@gmail.com
