Salem Community College's 50th Anniversary Commemorative Book |
Book celebrates SCC’s 50 years of serving students and the community
Salem Community College celebrates its golden anniversary with an extraordinary book researched, written and designed by longtime SCC employee Chuck Erhardt.
The 144-page commemorative edition titled Salem Community College: The First Fifty Years was made possible by PSEG Nuclear and the SCC Foundation. The book was produced in partnership with Printers of Salem County.
The keepsake traces SCC’s roots to the Salem County School for Licensed Practical Nursing in 1958 which became the Salem County Vocational-Technical Institute the following year. Thirteen years later, the Salem County Board of Chosen Freeholders established Salem Community College.
The author collected hundreds of vintage photos from those formative years to the 50th annual Commencement ceremony on May 18, 2022. Many pictures highlight SCC’s well-deserved reputation for personalized attention. Among the other highlights are chapters on SCC’s nationally renowned glass programs and the rich history of intercollegiate athletics. The chapter titled “Visitors of Note” spotlights celebrities including Johnny Cash, June Carter Cash and the “First Lady of Country Music” Tammy Wynette as well as New Jersey governors.
In the introduction, President Mike Gorman offers a tip of the SCC cap to the generations of students. “Without you, there is no Salem Community College. Thank you for the privilege of serving your learning needs.”
Erhardt joined SCC in 1998, making him one of SCC’s longest-serving employees. The award-winning writer earned a bachelor’s degree in communication from Neumann College (now Neumann University) and a master’s degree in public relations from Rowan University.
Each book is $50 plus $10 for shipping. To order, visit www.salemcc.edu/book. Copies are also available for $50 in the SCC Foundation office in Tillis Hall, Room TIL-210, Monday through Thursday between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.
