In Alberta, businesses are leaders in their communities. The Alberta government is committed to keeping you informed of the latest information regarding COVID-19, and to working with you to keep your businesses, clients and staff as safe as possible.
You are invited to this week’s Telephone Town Hall taking place from 4:00-5:00 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 29, where Martin Long, Parliamentary Secretary, Small Business and Tourism will be joined by:
  • Dr. Deena Hinshaw, Chief Medical Officer of Health

Dr. Hinshaw and I will answer your questions about the spread of COVID-19 and talk about ways that you can help limit the spread. We will also answer any questions you have about Alberta’s Recovery Plan and how government can continue to provide support during these difficult times.

COVID-19 Business & Community Resources
Targeted Supports for Hard-Hit Businesses

The Government of Canada announced its intention to introduce new, targeted supports to help hard-hit businesses and other organizations experiencing a drop in revenue. The government plans to introduce legislation to provide support that would help these businesses safely get through the second wave of the virus and the winter, including:
  • The new Canada Emergency Rent Subsidy, which would provide simple and easy-to-access rent and mortgage support until June 2021 for qualifying organizations affected by COVID-19.
  • A top-up Canada Emergency Rent Subsidy of 25 per cent for organizations temporarily shut down by a mandatory public health order issued by a qualifying public health authority, in addition to the 65 per cent subsidy.
  • The extension of the Canada Emergency Wage Subsidy until June 2021.
  • An expanded Canada Emergency Business Account (CEBA).
 
The Government of Canada launches applications for the Canada Recovery Benefit 
 
This week, the Government of Canada opened the application process for the CRB. Applications for the CRSB and the CRCB opened on October 5, 2020.
 
Have Your Say About Budget 2021
 
Alberta’s government is asking Albertans to help set the direction of the upcoming budget. The online survey is now live until Dec. 4, and telephone town halls will take place on Nov. 30, Dec. 2, and Dec. 3. More information is available at alberta.ca/BudgetConsultation.
 
More STEAM Opportunities for Students
 
Alberta’s government is partnering with Shad Canada to create more opportunities for Grades 10 and 11 students to take part in a STEAM and entrepreneurship summer program. Through a four-year funding partnership, Shad Canada will expand recruiting to more high schools and provide bursaries to more female, Indigenous, and low-income students, as well as those who live in remote or rural areas. 
Province Announces Funding for
QEII Interchange
On Oct. 15th the Airdrie Chamber was please to attend a press conference where Alberta Transportation announced further funding for the QEII and 40th Avenue interchange. The project will support continued residential and commercial development and enhance the region’s overall economic strength.
Alberta Chamber of Commerce Survey
The second survey in the Alberta Chamber of Commerce municipal red tape and business supports series is now live. Please take the time to complete the below 3 minutes survey as the findings will be given to our advocacy committee to determine our next steps in helping local business on a municipal basis.
