Exciting News for Wintertide Lights

Wintertide Lights will return to the Evergreen Arboretum December 1 - 31--with more lights everywhere and three family events thanks to an economic stimulus grant from the City of Everett and generous donors. This makes us 3 for 3 on grants for 2021!

If you'd like to help us add more even more lights to the gardens, click on the donate button below.
Wintertide Lights Kids' Events

We take our crafts seriously at EA&G, and so we enlisted our ace Kids Crafts Test Team to try out our ideas. Now that we have received their official seal of approval, we will be getting our supplies together for December fun.

Saturday, December 4 from 4 to 6 p.m. We will be serving hot cocoa and handing out candy canes and wintergreen plants to each child as long as supplies last.

Saturday, December 11 and 18 from 4 to 6 p.m. Kids will have the opportunity to create a holiday luminaria and go on a gnome scavenger hunt.

And every night there will be lights throughout the gardens!
Brightening Up the Entry: The Renovation Begins, Slowly
A few of our volunteers took the small first step toward the renovation of the Small Tree Walk when they planted dozens of hellebores and daffodils at the north entrance to the Small Tree Walk. Beginning in early 2022, visitors to the Arboretum will be greeted by a variety of beautiful hellebores followed by bright yellow daffodils in the spring. The hellebores will become more substantial as they settle into place, and the daffodils should multiply, offering more cheer each spring.
Board member Alan Heck

Alan, a graduate of the Edmonds College horticulture program, lives in the Rucker Hill neighborhood of Everett. As part of his degree program, he completed an internship with the Evergreen Arboretum. When he expressed interest in joining our board and chairing the 2022 plant sale, we were delighted. In addition to his Arboretum responsibilities, Alan is currently working as an intern with the Elisabeth C. Miller Botanical Garden in Shoreline. He is very excited about the opportunity to contribute to the success of the Arboretum and hopes to make next summer’s plant sale one of the most successful to date. He also looks forward to contributing to the set up of this year's Wintertide Lights and continuing to support maintenance efforts in the arboretum. Please say hello if you see him working in the gardens.
Time Warp in the Arboretum?
Model, on right, Safi
We wish we could tell you more about Safi, but all we know is that she looks fabulous.
No, this is not Louis XVI's Versailles but our very own Evergreen Arboretum. For those of you who visited the Arboretum on Saturday, October 16, perhaps you were lucky enough to have spotted these women in their fairy tale dresses made by Helene Hawthorne of Stanwood. Helene, who has her own Etsy shop, says, "The Arboretum is a beautiful place to shoot. I found it via a Google search." We thank her for sharing these beautiful photos.
Actor Sheila Houlahan
Sheila is an actor with her own website. Look her up if you're curious. She's been in a number of films.
Can You Spot the Birds?
You never know what you'll see when you visit the Arboretum. A visit on a recent Saturday morning had us looking up at the sky instead of down at plants to observe flock after flock of geese flying overhead.
While we were looking at the geese, an eagle landed just above where we were standing, announcing itself with that distinctive cry that seems too dainty for such a large bird. He or she is a bit challenging to see.
What Brings You to the Arboretum? An Occasional Series
Saturday, October 16 was a busy day at the Arboretum. Not only were our volunteers busy working in the gardens, but drill teams from Seattle and Lynnwood showed up to use our colorful new sculpture as a backdrop for their team photos. When asked how they came to the Arboretum, they said said they looked online for good places for family photos--and the Evergreen Arboretum popped up.
Volunteer for Pre-Wintertide Tidying

Join us from 10 a.m. to noon as we put the gardens to bed for winter every Saturday in November. Bring you own gloves, tools, and water as we make sure the Arboretum looks its best for Wintertide Lights. We'll be cutting back grasses and hostas, making sure pathways are clear, and continuing our fight against weeds, which never seem to stop growing.

We'll also be putting up the lights and other decorations in preparation for our December 1 opening day, so if you're a fan of holiday decorating we can use your skills in November.
It's Winter Break for Our Classes
