November 2023

Over 350 guests attended the 2023 Gala of Dreams on October 14th. It was incredible to see so many people come out to support Birthday Dreams; we are thrilled to announce that the Gala was the most successful fundraising event we have ever had. Over $250,000 was raised, which puts us on target to meet our event fundraising goal, and post-event donations are still coming in!
We premiered two new videos at the Gala: the 2023 Birthday Dreams Organization Video and the 2023 Volunteer of the Year featuring Terah Rios. To view Gala photos, please visit the Birthday Dreams website.
We are already planning next year's event. Once we have our date selected for 2024, you will be the first to know!
Our sincere appreciation to everyone who attended and to all of our amazing sponsors (see end of newsletter) for their financial support! Because of YOU, our valued guests and supporters, we will be able to provide our services to over 1,500 homeless children in 2024. THANK YOU!

Please consider donating items for Birthday Dreams during your Black Friday (Friday, November 24) and Cyber Monday (Monday, November 27) shopping sprees this year!
Our Amazon Wish List was just updated to include our current needs and wants. Please keep checking back too as we update it with deals going on throughout the month.

#GivingTuesday is a movement to create an international day of charitable giving at the beginning of the Christmas and holiday season. This year it is on Tuesday, November 28th. Link for giving.
Giving Tuesday was created in 2012 as a day that encourages people to do good. Since then, it has grown into a year-round global movement that inspires hundreds of millions of people to give, collaborate, and celebrate generosity.
As an active participant in the GivingTuesday season of giving campaign, Birthday Dreams appreciates your support!

The below feedback was provided by a parent who was able to give their child a birthday party to remember, thanks to Birthday Dreams. This is why, with your support, we continue to do what we do:
“I am homeless and I now stay at a shelter. I needed help because I couldn’t afford to make a party for my daughter’s birthday and wanted to see her day celebrated well and happy....the party meant everything to my baby. She loved the gifts and the colorful cake that was sent. [The party] makes a lot of difference to my daughter. It boosts her mood by feeling appreciated and loved and cared for. For me I get happy when my kids are happy...Thanks a lot.”

Each month Birthday Dreams receives grant awards from our terrific foundation partners. Without their support, we could not do what we do. Over the past month, we received grants from the below partners:
We are humbled by and incredibly thankful for our community partners!

We have been so fortunate to have support from the M.J. Murdock Charitable Trust over these past three years. Their grant supplied the funding for our Development Director position, which has proven to be a greatly important position for Birthday Dreams. Thank you, M.J. Murdock Charitable Trust!
Volunteer Spotlight | Carol Oshiro
Carol Oshiro registered as a Birthday Dreams volunteer in September 2022 and signed up for her first gift donation the following month. Since then, she has donated over 50 items to our birthday children’s parties, including cupcakes/cakes for 29 children (some have been featured in past newsletters), complete sets of birthday gifts for 13 children, juice for six parties, and all the necessary party supplies for two parties. She has also donated monetarily to our Spring Fundraiser, Miles for Smiles, and to a friend's Facebook birthday fundraiser.
When asked about why she decided to start volunteering at Birthday Dreams she said:
| |
|
“I retired from the Kent School District after 20 years. I’ve always believed in volunteering and after retiring I had to find a new way to do that. My son’s girlfriend, Jill Slabey, was baking cakes for Birthday Dreams so I looked them up. I knew that I could help in some way. I started by buying gifts for a child. Next, I baked cupcakes for a dinosaur party. Then I got the courage to try a cake. I hadn’t baked a cake since my three children were young. I always made sure that they had a special birthday. I saw how important it was to them, so this lets me help other children now. I now try to buy gifts for one child, and bake between two to four cakes, a month.”
We are lucky to have Carol as a consistent volunteer every month.
