Power of Play: $250,000 grant!
What started as a dream for a group of Carl Junction teachers, staff, and community leaders for fully inclusive playgrounds for all Carl Junction students is much closer to reality today as the Power of Play Project is the recipient of a $250,000 matching grant.

The Missouri Department of Natural Resources, Division of State Parks, through the federally funded Land and Water Conservation Fund of the National Park Service selected Carl Junction Schools’ project as one of nine funded projects in State.

A colorful playground structure with children and adults playing is pictured from above. All parts are accessible and low to the ground. Surfacing is handicap accessible outdoor rubber.
CJ opens Outdoor Classroom
A year ago, Carl Junction High School began renovations to reopen their Outdoor Classroom utilizing a $10,000 grant from America’s Farmers Grow Rural Education program, sponsored by the Monsanto Fund.

The Outdoor Classroom suffered significant damage from the 2003 tornado that hit the Carl Junction Schools and community. While the focus of rebuilding and repairing the school buildings was the first priority, the outdoor classroom became overgrown and unusable for students until CJHS Science Teacher Dione Friel and her students began to dream of the learning opportunities for all students that could be available in the outdoor classroom.

Students sit outdoors in a wild area under a wooden structure with tin roof, cement floor, and wooden picnic tables. There is also a stone fire pit.

Footloose takes the stage
A cast of Carl Junction High School actors will present the exciting musical “Footloose” based on the iconic film.

Footloose  is the story of Ren McCormack, a teenage boy from Chicago. He and his mother move to the small town of Bomont after his father abandons them. Upon arriving, Ren finds himself at odds with most of the town, including the Reverend Bomont. The Reverend has convinced the town to outlaw dancing, which Ren finds unbelievable. With the help of the Ariel (the Reverend’s daughter) and Willard (a country boy who becomes his best friend), Ren convinces the Reverend to let the teenagers dance, and in the process helps the town to heal from a tragedy that affected them all.

Parental Guidance suggested - a couple of scenes contain innuendo and teen partying.
