Chargers SC MLS NEXT Academy Division Wraps Up Fall Season; Preparations Underway for MLS NEXT Fest
The Chargers Soccer Club’s MLS NEXT Academy Division U15–U19 teams have officially concluded their fall season and now transition into a short break as players begin their high school soccer campaigns across the region. The fall schedule brought strong performances, continued player growth, and competitive matches across the MLS NEXT platform.
While the older age groups shift into their high school seasons, the U13 and U14 Academy Division teams will continue league play through the winter months, maintaining momentum and development as part of their regular MLS NEXT calendar.
The U13–U19 MLS NEXT Homegrown Division teams are also nearing the end of their fall campaigns, with just a few remaining fixtures before the winter break. These matches will be key opportunities for players to finish the season strong and demonstrate their progress within the Chargers’ developmental pathway.
Meanwhile, preparations are already underway for one of the most anticipated events on the MLS NEXT calendar — the MLS NEXT Fest, taking place in Phoenix, Arizona, in early December. The Chargers’ U15–U19 Academy teams will represent the club on the national stage, competing against some of the top programs in North America. The event serves as a major showcase for players to be seen by college coaches, scouts, and professional club representatives from MLS and beyond.
“MLS NEXT Fest is a tremendous opportunity for our players to test themselves against the best and to gain valuable exposure,” said Mike Keeney, Executive Director and MLS NEXT Director of Chargers SC. “Our players have worked hard throughout the fall, and we’re proud of the development shown across all divisions. The upcoming months will continue to provide high-level competition and growth opportunities for everyone involved.”
As the fall season winds down, Chargers SC remains focused on its mission to provide a complete player development pathway, from Homegrown to Academy and MLS NEXT competition, while fostering success both on and off the field.

Zac MacMath Returns to Chargers
Welcome Home, Zac!
We’re excited to announce that Zac MacMath—former Chargers standout and 15-year MLS veteran goalkeeper—has officially retired from Major League Soccer and returned home to the Chargers Soccer Club.
Zac, a St. Petersburg native, was a key player on the 2006 U14 State Championship team coached by Pete Mannino and Matt King. He went on to become the 5th overall pick in the 2011 MLS SuperDraft and built an exceptional professional career with Philadelphia Union, Colorado Rapids, Vancouver Whitecaps, and Real Salt Lake, earning:
- 240 appearances / 238 starts
- 21,443 minutes played
- 67 shutouts and 709 saves
- Three Team Humanitarian of the Year awards
- He also played every minute of every match in both the 2013 and 2023 MLS seasons.
Before his pro career, Zac starred at the University of Maryland, winning the 2007 National Championship, multiple ACC titles, and setting school records for shutouts and goals-against average. He also represented the United States at the U15, U17, U18, U20, and U23 levels, competing in over 25 countries—including the 2007 FIFA U17 World Cup and multiple international championships.
Today, Zac is giving back to the club where it all began. He is assisting Coach Pete Mannino with the 2018 Chargers Boys and working as a goalkeeper coach with Bryane Heaberlin under GK Director Kevin Clinton. Zac also holds a Master’s degree in Sports Management and a US Soccer Pro B License.
A Note from former Coach & DOC, Peter Mannino
“I’m so very proud of Zac and how he went about succeeding in his endeavors. He achieved greatness at every level—youth, national, collegiate, and professionally for 15 years. Zac is a true hard-working achiever, a humble athlete, and a very special young man. He has come full circle to return home to the Chargers, along with his beautiful family. He is an exemplary role model for our young players and families. Thank you, Zac!”
