Quote of the Month:
"Before coming to L.A. I didn't know much about the different communities in America. I got to not just learn, but feel what American culture is like. That was definitely an enriching experience. As a journalist, I will try to contact some of the speakers I met to interview them."

Welcome New Projects Coordinator!

Victoria Meza graduated from the University of Hawaii at Mānoa with a Bachelor’s degree in Korean through the Language Flagship program and speaks fluent Korean. She spent her senior year abroad studying at Korea University in Seoul, South Korea. While there, she also completed an internship at the school’s Korean Studies Research Institute, specifically in the Center for Digital Humanities. As IVCLA’s Projects Coordinator, Victoria is responsible for database entry of visitor programs, as well as organizing and helping prep for upcoming visitor programs. Her favorite part about working at IVCLA is the international exchange of culture and building connections with people from around the world. Outside of IVCLA, she enjoys watching anime, listening to music from around the world, and is always interested in learning new languages.

Spotlight on Women's Empowerment
|
|
Over the years, IVCLA has made it a priority to foster women's empowerment initiatives through our programs and events. This month we'd like to highlight two IVCLA exchange programs that promote women's empowerment and leadership in communities around the world. In September, we hosted a group of women entrepreneurs from Georgia through the
Open World
program. The women are leaders in wine making, book publishing and journalism. During their week in Los Angeles, they attended meetings with resources and industry professionals in their respective fields, including
Book Soup
,
Women in International Trade Los Angeles
, the
National Association of Women Business Owners
, the
Women's Leadership Institute at UCLA
,
Vinovore
and
Cornell Winery
. Check out this
Food and Wine
article featuring one of our visitors, winemaker Baia Abuladze!
An important part of the Open World program is the home stay component. Visitors are fully immersed in L.A. culture by staying in the homes of Angelenos for an entire week. We would like to extend a special thank you to our IVCLA home hosts for opening their homes to these inspiring women and showing them L.A. through the eyes of a local. Thank you for your warm hospitality!

Next week we will welcome 49 exceptional women from 49 different countries who are participants of the 2nd annual
#HiddenNoMore
program through the U.S. Department of State's International Visitor Leadership Program. The program, which focuses on empowering women leaders in science, technology, engineering, the arts and math, began last year after the
21st Century Fox
Film
Hidden Figures
earned worldwide attention for highlighting under-representation of women in STEM fields. The program will culminate in Los Angeles with a special day at Fox Studios, a tour of the
California Science Center
, and site visits at
Caltech
and
USC
. Watch the video from last year's program and check out our
Twitter
page for updates on the group's L.A. visit next week!

November 15: Food Scarcity at Home and Abroad
Despite currently producing enough food to feed everyone in the world, roughly 11 percent of the global population went hungry in 2017, including 15 million Americans. On top of that, millions more are suffering from other forms of malnutrition including anemia among women, adult obesity and stunted growth in children under the age of five. Join Town Hall Los Angeles on Thursday, November 15th for a special dinner discussion on global and domestic food security issues with legendary UCLA and Olympic track star and community health champion Jackie Joyner-Kersee and Jim Collins, CEO of Corteva Agriscience, one of the world’s largest crop seed and protection companies with operations in over 130 nations.
