USC Shaeffer Center, was also included, where they discussed the significance of independent research in

IVCLA Board Member Spotlight: Combating Child Marriage
"Historically, the issue of Child Marriage has been swept under the rug in American society. It is important legislators, as well as citizens, are educated on the implied abuse in every marriage that involves a minor girl legally married to an older man via a power differential."
--Rima Nashashibi
After months of research and various meetings through her organization, Global Hope 365, IVCLA board member
Rima Nashashibi announced the launch of the California Coalition to End Child Marriage. Through the support of elected officials and community leaders, the California Coalition will continue to spread awareness throughout the state to increase momentum for legislative change against child marriage.

IVCLA Members Humanitarian Connections
Honorary Consul General of Senegal Mame Mbaye, Khalipha Abubakar and Judy Smith picking up donated medical supplies from Direct Relief.
IVCLA volunteer Judy Smith’s phone call to IVCLA member Paula LeBrot led to the perfect connection for a donation of medical supplies for a trip to Senegal. Judy was joining Mame Mbaye, the Honorary Consul of Senegal in Los Angeles, and several other Los Angeles area residents on a trip to Senegal on behalf of Tekki Foundation, which was founded by Consul Mbaye with the mission to create health and educational opportunities for people living in Senegal. When Judy saw Paula’s background information in her IVCLA profile, she thought she might be a good person to ask. Sure enough, Paula provided a contact at
Direct Relief which led to a generous donation of medical supplies. They were able to provide supplies to the central hospital in Thies, an urgent care center, an orphanage and several schools, including the elementary school Consul Mbaye attended as a child. Upon returning to L.A. they had the opportunity to tour the Direct Relief headquarters in Santa Barbara and discuss future partnership opportunities. People-to-people connections can make a difference in the world!
