Common Threads
NOVEMBER 2022
|
|
It is during the celebration of Thanksgiving we reflect on the many blessings in our lives. I have been very blessed this year to celebrate three milestones in my life with my St. Brigid parish family -- my 75th birthday, the 50th anniversary of my ordination, and 25 years at our parish. I received hundreds of prayers and well wishes. I am so grateful for all my experiences here and the lifelong friendships I have made. It has been a privilege to be a part of your lives.
One of our blessings at St. Brigid of Kildare is our elementary school and the gift of Catholic education that we have to offer our parish children. But Catholic education is a sacrifice. Our tuition is $6,750 per student. During the last few weeks, we have been sharing the news of a new program through the State of Ohio that will offer a tax credit for donations to Scholarship Granting Organizations. This will allow St. Brigid of Kildare to provide scholarships to attend our school to students with financial need.
In 2021, The Diocese of Columbus chartered the Diocesan Education Corp, an entity approved by the State's Attorney General's office to become a "Scholarship Granting Organization" (SGO) for non-public schools. This SGO operates under the name of the Emmaus Road Scholarship Fund (Emmaus) and is prepared to accept donations. There is not a limit to how much you can give, but donors will receive a dollar-for-dollar Ohio state tax credit up to $750, or $1,500 for married couples filing jointly. This is not a tax deduction in the traditional sense, it is a dollar-for-dollar tax credit that allows you to earmark your Ohio income taxes for Catholic education scholarships.
If you choose to donate to Emmaus Road Scholarship Fund by December 31, 2022, you will be able to take a tax credit on your 2022 state taxes. If you designate St. Brigid of Kildare School, 100% of your donation will be available to St. Brigid to be used to give scholarships to students with financial need. Your donation would go a long way in keeping Catholic education affordable for our families, especially those most in need. You may still use your donation as a deduction on your federal income tax return.
Below is more information and links to donate. If you can take advantage of this program, it would make a significant impact on the children in our parish. Thank you again for all your support and have a safe and blessed Thanksgiving.
Sincerely in Christ,
Rev. Msgr. Joseph M. Hendricks

Thanksgiving Food Drive: Over 350 Families Fed
|
Food pantries continue to see a drastic increase in the number of families approaching them for assistance. Nearly 2,500 individuals are being served by the Dublin Food Pantry monthly, which is a significant increase from last year.
We asked for help and once again, the parishioners of St. Brigid have met the challenge and shown their compassion and generosity for their fellow citizens in Dublin. During the recent Thanksgiving food collection, St. Brigid contributed meals to feed 350 families and over $8,000 in gift cards for families facing unexpected hardships.
In addition to the parishioners, the Social Action Committee would like to thank Monsignor Hendricks for his continued support; Kim VanHuffel for contacting donors and setting up the signup genius again; and the Knights of Columbus, their spouses, Deacon Paul and other volunteers for help with the drive-thru collections this year.

Congratulations Eagle Scout
|
Congratulations to Joe Gallo, a St. Brigid parishioner and senior at Dublin Coffman High School who received his Eagle Scout recognition this month at St. Brigid with his parents, Mary and Joe.
Eagle Scout is the highest advancement in Boy Scouting. For Joe’s service project, he designed and led a team to build an oversized Little Library which sits outside the main entrance of Depp Elementary School. The Depp students, together with their librarian, spent part of the school year choosing the initial books to be included in the lending library. Congratulations on achieving this high honor, Joe!

Emmaus Road Scholarship Fund: New Ohio Tax Credit
|
This weekend at Mass, we spoke about a new state program that allows donors to receive a tax credit on their Ohio tax return up to $750 ($1,500 if married and filing jointly).
In 2021 the State of Ohio created a Scholarship Granting Organization (SGO) Program. This program allows Ohio taxpayers to donate to a K-12 SGO for that school to use for scholarships for tuition based on financial need. The donor then receives a dollar-for-dollar non-refundable tax credit on their Ohio state tax return up to $750 ($1,500 if married and filing jointly). This is in addition to a federal tax deduction you are always able to take.
The Emmaus Road Scholarship Fund (under the Diocesan Education Corporation) is certified as an SGO by the Ohio Attorney General. This fund solely benefits students in the Diocese of Columbus Catholic Schools.
Parishioners, family, and friends of St. Brigid of Kildare can donate and directly designate St. Brigid of Kildare School as the recipient of their donation. If you choose not to designate a school, the money will be used in a general fund for financial aid for diocesan students based on need.
All donations will be managed through the Emmaus Road Scholarship Fund.
100% of those funds will be available to our school the following tax year to be used for scholarships for our students.
To donate online, click the Donate link below (type St. Brigid of Kildare School in the text box if you would like your donation to go to St. Brigid School).

St. Brigid Financial FAQs
|
Below are some Financial FAQs with answers from the St Brigid Finance Team. We occasionally get questions from parishioners and answer them in the parish bulletin. We decided to broaden our audience and include for the first time in the Common Threads. We hope you find this information interesting!
FAQ: I heard there is a Christmas Giving Project at St Brigid. How did it start and how do you select the recipients?
When Covid-19 hit in early 2020, generous parishioners donated thousands of dollars to help fellow parishioners through the pandemic. We were able to respond to every request for need and still had much left over. By Christmastime, we honored the desire of these generous givers and established the Christmas Giving Project.
Monsignor Hendricks asked his staff to submit names of families or individuals who might be suffering hardship or struggling financially. We came up with a list of 20 recipients and sent $1000 to each, with the message that they “feel the love of your parish family and that it renews your faith and hope in this troubled time”. The responses we received were so appreciative, we opted to continue the program the next year. We occasionally get gifts from parishioners asking their donation be used where it is most needed. Most times, we opt to put it in this fund. If you need help through the holidays or know of a family or individual in need, please reach out to one of our clergy members. We do our best to send these generous gifts to fellow parishioners who could use a hand and hope.
Feel free to send any financial questions to Becky O'Connor, our Business Manager, at boconnor@stbrigidofkildare.org. If you are wondering about something, there is a good chance someone else is too!

RCIA Rite of Acceptance: Nov 27 at 9 AM Mass
|
RCIA stands for the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults. It is the process by which adults are initiated into the Catholic Church.
Participants in the RCIA come to sessions on Tuesday nights here at St. Brigid of Kildare Church from October through Easter (with some breaks). Some are unbaptized and others are already Baptized in another Christian denomination.
RCIA Rite of Acceptance
On November 27 at the 9 a.m. Mass, many inquirers from the RCIA will be participating in the Rite of Acceptance. This is a great opportunity to see those who are making a commitment to become Catholic and to pray for them!
What is the Rite of Acceptance?
During this Rite, adults who have not been baptized, and those who have been baptized in another Christian faith, declare their intention to join the Catholic Church, and, the Church in turn accepts them as part of the community. Those who have not been baptized become Catechumens and the those already baptized become Candidates.
Then What?
The new Catechumens and Candidates will continue to meet on Tuesday nights until Easter to learn more about the beliefs of the Catholic Church and to deepen their faith in God and strengthen their relationship with Him. You may see them being called forward before the Liturgy of the Eucharist during Mass and being dismissed with a catechist to learn more about the Word of God. This will happen each Sunday until the day when they will share with us at the Lord’s table. Please keep them in your prayers.

Messages of Light for Advent and Christmas 2022
Three minutes is all it takes to change your day for the better this coming Advent.
The rich yet uncomplicated daily reflections in Messages of Light for Advent and Christmas 2022 will guide you from the first Sunday of Advent through Epiphany. With practical, everyday wisdom, Fr. Michael White and Tom Corcoran will help you focus on the season of light in the darkest days of winter. You will be invited to accept Christ’s light in your own life by embracing the truth and peace he offers, sharing his light with others, and preparing yourself to celebrate the great feast of Christmas.
Each day you’ll read a verse or two of scripture, a short reflection, and a simple prayer prompt that will help you draw closer to God. While each devotion can be completed in about three minutes, you’ll reap the comfort and inspiration they bring throughout the day.
Buy it here or bring $2.00 to HSYM's guest speaker event in Hendricks Hall on 11/16 to purchase a copy from St. Brigid HSYM (limited number available through St. Brigid HSYM).
