Doylestown Troop 71 Completes 2,000 hours of Service for Heritage Conservancy

Over five years of volunteering, Troop 71 has made substantial improvements to our nature preserves in Central Bucks.

Boy Scout Troop 71 of Doylestown was busy this past summer with two major projects to serve the community: a new boardwalk at Heritage Conservancy’s Jackson Pond Preserve and an information kiosk at Russell-Mandel Preserve. In completing these, the troop surpassed 2,000 hours of cumulative service to Heritage Conservancy since they started working with us in 2020!

Wrapping Up a Busy Tree Planting Season

Heritage Conservancy staff stepped away from their desks for a morning tree planting.

This summer and fall, Heritage Conservancy planted more than 2,000 native trees, shrubs, and wildflowers across our nature preserves in Bucks County! It took an entire community to make it happen. From restoration work to all-hands-on-deck staff days to dedicated volunteers and corporate partners, the past few months have been a testament to what we can accomplish together.

New to the Register of Historic Places: Lahaska Methodist Church

When the congregation outgrew their nearby home in 1853, they purchased land at the intersection of York and Street Roads and built the church for $1,000.

Today’s parishioners at the Lahaska United Methodist Church continue to meet in the same sanctuary where the church’s earliest members began worshipping in 1853. This recent addition to Heritage Conservancy’s Register of Historic Places stands as a reminder of the country churches that served as community hubs in bucolic mid-19th century Bucks County.

What Do the Wild Turkeys of Pennsylvania Eat?

Conservation Biologist Sebastian Harris flips the script this season.

As Thanksgiving nears, it’s a great time to consider what the wild turkeys of PA savor. Spoiler alert: it isn’t stuffing, casseroles, or pumpkin pie. They prefer the fruits and seeds that native plants cook up. What’s on the menu for our odd but beloved feathered friends, and do you have anything near your home that lures them?

So what exactly are the wild turkeys eating this time of year?
