Trauma Recovery/HAP Newsletter
November/December 2019
Hello ,

The Trauma Recovery, EMDR Humanitarian Assistance Programs community of volunteers - whether educators, or clinicians providing treatment, enters this holiday season of giving united in the belief that trauma can be healed! Whether you serve through education, advocacy, crisis intervention or giving, the Board and staff are grateful for your unfailing generosity.  Your donations - time, talent and financial support, bring relief to those suffering the effects of trauma locally and in developing countries. We must press on with the urgent work of recovery and hope we can count on your continued support - mind, body and spirit.

Thank you from all of us at Trauma Recovery,
EMDR Humanitarian Assistance Programs

In this issue, learn about the on-going life changing work at a Wisconsin hospital, an update on Puerto Rico, and the passion of faculty and Trauma Recovery trained clinicians network-wide:
  • Agnesian HealthCare - client results lead agency to EMDR training of staff,
  • Puerto Rico Update - Treatment outcomes, innovation and new research partnership following Hurricane Maria relief training efforts,
  • Our Annual Appeal - the healing work your support enabled throughout the year to the victims of the many, many crises. The need to increase the number of EMDR and related therapy-trained professionals escalates as war, terrorism, violence and disasters sew chaos worldwide.

All the best,
Carol R. Martin

Client Results Lead to Agency EMDR Training
When Beth Rogers-Doll, Ph.D., executive director of Agnesian Behavioral HealthCare, saw stunning client success with EMDR therapy in her practice, Doll & Associates, she knew she had to share this therapy with her colleagues.  Originally trained in EMDR in 1999, she had not really used EMDR until retraining with Trauma Recovery, EMDR Humanitarian Assistance Programs in 2012.
Following retraining, she proactively applied EMDR and saw dramatic progress in client healing. She knew many more needed help in her Fond du Lac, Wisconsin community, and began searching for a means to bring EMDR training to Agnesian HealthCare.

Update: Trauma Recovery, EMDR Humanitarian Assistance Programs in Puerto Rico
In 2018, Trauma Recovery, EMDR Humanitarian Assistance Programs responded to rising suicides and related trauma suffering in Puerto Rico (PR) following Hurricane Maria with EMDR Basic I and II trainings.  Working with Vanessa Cintrón, M.A., the Puerto Rican Coalition in Minnesota, and the Association of Social Workers, the first trainings were held in June and August 2018, at the Interamerican University in San Juan, with 44 participants including counselors, social workers and psychologists.

Together We Have Healed Trauma
Bessel Vander Kolk said, "hurt people, hurt people".  Our mission is to help clinicians heal hurt people with EMDR therapy.  Throughout 2019, Trauma Recovery, EMDR Humanitarian Assistance Programs (HAP) has worked with many of you in numerous training sessions and TRN®s pro bono relief efforts to heal trauma's victims, and stop the cycle of hurting.  Trainers, facilitators, consultants and clinicians have met in trainings across the United States and the globe to train in EMDR therapy and relieve trauma suffering. Together we have increased worldwide capacity to treat trauma, built community resilience and helped victims recover.

Pet of the Month:

"A true friend leaves paw prints on your heart" - Unknown

"Moses is a 13 year old domestic short haired cat. Moses came to our house in February 2018, after the death of his owner, my dad. Moses may have been   traumatized by witnessing the death of dad and remaining with him until it was discovered three days later.  When I went to find Moses at the house, he came out as soon as he heard my voice and sat in my lap in the car for the hour ride ride to my house.  Moses has attached himself to me ever since.  The first few weeks Moses had night terrors and would wake up howling. Now the terrors have stopped. We laugh that Moses is part dog, as he follows me around the house and is very friendly to visitors.  He is always at the back door when I come home from work each night. Moses drools when he purrs, and he purrs alot, so you often get a facial when he goes to bed at night. We can't imagine life without Moses at this point. We have another cat and a dog, Moses gets along with just fine. I think both of us are glad to have found each other. "
