From Duckpin Bowling and Lake Trout to Civil Rights and hidden architectural gems, the videos share stories of Baltimore history that hopefully bring back memories and change current perspectives. Join Johns Hopkins, Baltimore Heritage's director and video narrator, to talk through a few of the videos and get a glimpse of how the project went from a crazy idea with Johns' 15-year old daughter filming in their living room to a YouTube series with nearly a million views.

Lantern Night

Fall was in the air and the evening was perfect for the Fire Museum of Maryland's annual Lantern Night celebration on October 21. Our staff lit candle and kerosene lanterns on many pieces of apparatus, making visitors feel like they were strolling into the past. Historic re-enactors also helped set the scene. Also, having our working 1947 Baltimore City Fire Department floodlight wagon light up the Museum entrance provided that extra glow against the setting sun. Save the date: Lantern Night 2024 is set for Saturday, October 26.

Volunteers inducted into Maryland Senior Citizens Hall of Fame

On Thursday, October 19, two volunteers at the Glenn L. Martin Maryland Aviation Museum, Fred Fahdt and Ray Helmick, were inducted into the Maryland Senior Citizens Hall of Fame at Ten Oaks Ballroom in Clarksville, MD. Fred, in charge of the wood shop, joined the Museum in 2001. He is a trained artist, and his career was in graphic arts. Still going strong as he approaches his 93rd birthday, his shop has created signage, display cases, and built a full-size reproduction of the Martin MS-1 from scratch. Ray, the leader of the restoration team, joined the Museum 2012. An FAA certified airframe and powerplant mechanic, he served as a crew chief on a UH-1H in Vietnam, and maintained and flew AH-1 Cobras while employed by Bell Helicopter..
