How French Brought Me From Connecticut to Switzerland
Saturday, November 1st
1:00 PM
Via Zoom
Annette Fay, originally from Enfield, Connecticut, is an expert in international development who specializes in research, monitoring and evaluation of water and sanitation projects. She has worked in more than a dozen African countries, as well as France, and is presently living in Switzerland. Annette is the daughter of Audrey Fay, former board member of the Alliance Française de Hartford.
She states:
"I plan to present how learning the French language first in Connecticut and later in France lead to my interest and work in Francophone West Africa. I’ll speak about my international development work in West Africa over the past twenty years and how I’ve ended up now in Switzerland. I’ll also share observations of the different cultures I’ve gotten to know well (including a few lessons learned!)."

Madagascar from the Deep Past to the Uncertain Present
Saturday, December 13th, 2025
3:00 PM
| | | |
Presented by Alison Richard
In Person - in English
Place:
Atlantic Works Conference Center
57 Charter Oak Ave, Hartford, CT
After a brief overview of the history of human settlement in Madagascar, this talk will focus on the past century. During this period, Madagascar was a colony of France, regained its independence in 1960, and today faces many challenges. Alison Richard will single out environmental issues, the role of the colonial administration in shaping the current narrative, and her long-term partnership with Malagasy colleagues and a community in the southwest to conserve the surrounding forests and wildlife while also improving local livelihoods and well-being.
Alison Richard is a Senior Research Scientist in the Yale Anthropology Department and Franklin Muzzy Crosby Professor Emerita of the Human Environment, and was Provost of Yale University from 1994-2002. She has studied the ecology and social behavior of wild primates in Africa, Central America, and the Himalayan foothills, but she is most widely known for her research on lemurs in Madagascar. Her most recent book, The Sloth Lemur’s Song: Madagascar from the Deep Past to the Uncertain Present, is a far-reaching account of Madagascar past and present. For fifty years, she has worked to help conserve the island’s unique natural heritage and enhance socio-economic opportunities for people living in and around forests in the southwest.
