SUMMIT

HIGHLIGHTS

A great and encouraging time was had by all who attended the Summit last month. Just being in the WMU National Headquarters building is inspiring. We were surrounded by memorabilia of Great Commission work that has been going on through Woman’s Missionary Union for over 130 years. The Summit included worship, Bible study, educational offerings, and am amazing time of fellowship and networking among participants. Some highlights of the Summit include:

  • Worship. Participants engaged in uplifting worship led by Sara and Joel Burks from Birmingham. Joel serves as the contemporary worship leader at their church Sara is a pharmacist.

  • Bible Study. Bible Study was led by Stefan Dan Laing, a faculty member of Beeson Divinity School at the University of Alabama. Stefan provided us Biblical insight into standing firm, the BNF theme for 2022 and 2023. Standing FIRM is to be Faithful, Intentional, Relentless and Missional. Stefan addressed the 2022 emphasis of being faithful and intentional. As an added bonus, on Sunday morning Stefan took us through the history of healthcare and the establishment of hospitals.

  • Educational Opportunities. Participants at the Summit received a total of 5.1 contact hours. Educational offerings included an introduction to mental health first aid, adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), the effects of COVID on nursing, and how to lead a medical mission trip.

  • Missionaries and mission opportunities. Participants were able to hear about multiple mission opportunities and how they can engage in BNF during the panel discussions and roundtable event. We also heard from our missionary speaker, Debbie Savoie and her husband Marvin, via video as they serve in East Asia.  As a special treat, Paul Chitwood, President of the International Mission Board, and Kevin Ezell, President of the North American Mission Board, sent video greetings to BNF, thanking BNF and encouraging us to continue in our Great Commission work.
  • Fellowship and Fun. Old friends were able to connect and greet each other and new friends were made. Many folks brought items for the Silent Auction and great fun was had by all. Over $1,400 was raised for the Grober Fund. The Summit closed with our traditional blessing of the hands. This is always a meaningful and inspiring experience for all who participates.

The 2023 BNF Summit will be held in Jackson, Mississippi on November 3-4. You are encouraged to mark your calendar and plan to attend. You are promised a great and encouraging weekend as we Stand FIRM: Faithful, Intentional, Relentless and Missional.

November-December Health Awareness

November:

Diabetes Awareness

Type 2 diabetes by the numbers

  • Over 30 million adults in the United States have diabetes
  •  Diabetes is the seventh leading cause of death in the United States.
  • Diabetes is the number one cause of kidney failure, lower-limb amputations, and adult-onset blindness.
  • In the last 20 years, the number of adults diagnosed with diabetes has more than tripled as the American population has aged and become more overweight.
  • Medical costs and lost work and wages for people with diabetes totals $245 billion yearly.

Who’s at risk?

Individuals at risk for developing type 2 diabetes:

  • Are overweight.
  • Are 45 years or older.
  • Have a parent or sibling with type 2 diabetes
  • Aren’t very physically active

Symptoms

  • Urinate more than usual, especially at night
  • Are constantly thirsty
  • Lose weight without trying
  • Are very hungry
  • Have blurry vision
  • Have numb or tingling hands or feet
  • Feel tired much of the time
  • Have very dry skin
  • Have sores that heal slowly
  • Have more infections than usual

Individuals with any of these symptoms should see their healthcare provider about getting their blood sugar tested.

We, know, as healthcare professionals, there is no cure for diabetes.  That doesn’t mean, if diagnosed with the disease, a person can’t live a normal life. All healthcare professionals can have an impact on the lives of those they encounter with diabetes. Helping them to have a proper diet, urging them to exercise, and encouraging them to follow their healthcare provider’s recommendation for medication and lifestyle changes can go a long way in helping them managing and maintaining a healthy, happy lifestyle.

December:

Handwashing

One of the December national health emphases is hand washing. Nurses and other healthcare professionals know all too well that personal hygiene begins and ends with our hands. We know that clean hands prevent sickness. So, it’s especially important to practice and to teach the basics about hand hygiene so that the people you encounter can become a champion hand washer, too! Let’s examine some handy (see what I did there?) tips and info.

1.   Do it right

Experts recommend washing your hands with soap and clean water for at least 20 seconds. Be sure to get a good lather going and clean the back of the hands, between the fingers and under the nails. Dry them using a clean towel. There is a lot of science behind these recommendations, so be sure to follow them each time you wash your hands.

2.   Memorize the five steps

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention calls hand washing "a do-it-yourself vaccine" and suggests remembering five easy steps: Wet, lather, scrub, rinse, dry.

3.   Learn the Four Principles of Hand Awareness

Endorsed by the American Medical Association and American Academy of Family Physicians, the four principles are: 1) Wash your hands when they are dirty and before eating; 2) Do not cough into hands; 3) Do not sneeze into hands; and 4) Don't put your fingers in your eyes, nose or mouth.

Super Clean Facts about Handwashing

1.   Handwashing equals happiness

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, handwashing can prevent 1 in 3 diarrhea-related illnesses and 1 in 5 infections, including the flu.

2.   Beware the twin killers for kids

About 1.4 million children under age 5 die from diarrheal diseases and pneumonia — the two most deadly afflictions for children worldwide.

3.   The dirty secret of public restrooms

The CDC also reports that only 31 percent of men and 65 percent of women washed their hands after using a public restroom.

4.   Handwash your way to health

Using antibiotics creates antibiotic resistance. Handwashing prevents many sicknesses, so people need less antibiotics. Therefore, less antibiotic resistance.

5.   Sneezes are mini hurricanes

A typical human sneeze exits the body at about 200 miles per hour and emits around 40,000 droplets into the air.

Healthy hands are happy hands and happy hands make for happy and healthy homes. Handwashing helps prevent the spread of germs. Think of how many different things we touch during the course of an average day. Now imagine how many of those things were touched by other people's hands. Yuck! Wash your hands to prevent the spread of dangerous microbes. I realize this article is probably “preaching to the choir”, so to speak, be we should remind everybody — especially doctors and those who prepare the food we eat — to take handwashing seriously.
