CNY has new graduates for the Responsive Classroom Course that took place in November here at OCM BOCES. Teachers from North Syracuse, Auburn, Jamesville-DeWitt, ESM, Westhill and Caz were in attendance.
Also, the first group of teachers to attend the 2-day module Responsive Classroom Advanced Course: Effective Management. Teacher from Tully, South Jefferson Central, ESM, Baldwinsville, Cortland, and North Syracuse were in attendance. The Advance course modules are always so fun and like old home week to have former RCC participants return for new and deeper learning in the Responsive Classroom approach.
Some customized work was also done in Westhill showing the connections between Academic Choice and Project-Based Learning. It was nice to see the connections between academic choice and the gold standard PBL unit. Academic aligns well with PBL and can serve as a wonderful scaffold.
The Responsive Classroom Overview for Support Staff was held at the Cortland School District. Support staff from all 4 Elementary Schools in the district learned about the foundational aspects of Responsive Classroom and also looked closely at the 3 R’s of Language. The end of the day they also learned about the Responsive Classroom approach to discipline.
Emily Holland Elementary School in the Southern Cayuga School District, Aurora, NY started their RCC work at the end of the summer. They then had days 2 and 3 in September and finished up their 4-day training in December.
The December RCAC: Engaging Academics workshop and the remaining Responsive Classroom Roundtables have been canceled due to low enrollment. Cortland City Schools has offered to host the location for a summer “Responsive Classroom Advanced Course”

Responsive Classroom Newsletter: November 2015
“During the school day we spend most of our time in our classroom and so do twenty to thirty students (give or take a few!). Many of us feel that our classroom is not complete until it is covered with colorful displays brightly shouting what our classroom hopes to be:
Rules! Library! Math Area! Aa Bb Cc…
We adorn bulletin boards with cloth and staples; we spend hours stapling, pasting, and laminating in order to cover our walls with things that we hope will enhance our students’ experience.
But is this the best approach? Take a look at your classroom walls and displays. What do they say about you, your relationship with your class, and your view of teaching? Are your students guests in your room, or does the classroom feel like a space you share with them? Do the walls and displays show what you think and believe . . . or do they show what your students know, think, and wonder about?...” Read More
“Recently, more than a handful of my first graders were struggling with waiting to ask questions or make comments during direct instruction. I responded by using tried and true teacher practices: giving a clear signal (shaking my head no) to let the child know this was not an appropriate time, or simply saying "Ben, put your hand down. I'll ask for questions and comments soon." But the behavior did not stop. Instead, I found myself feeling exasperated when, one minute into the very next lesson, the same hands would go up when I was in the middle of talking…” Read More
