November Volunteer Spotlight:
Michael Pohnl
Mike earned a degree in Construction Management and an MBA in Materials and Logistics Management from Michigan State University a very long time ago. He has worked in the construction industry and public service for his entire career.
Mike retired in 2015 as Deputy Director of the State of Michigan Workforce Development Agency after working at the Michigan Economic Development Corporation and Workforce Development Agency for 33 years.
Mike has significant volunteer experience, including a 2 ½ year project (from 1991 – 1994) in Hungary as a Peace Corps Volunteer (Mike says, "they fired him") and later as an employee of the Hungarian Environmental Ministry to develop the first primary school environmental education curriculum after the change in government. Mike is the co-author of the first Hungarian environmental education textbook for the public school system there.
During tax season, Mike manages an all-volunteer tax service at TCOA sponsored by AARP. He coordinates 35 volunteers who complete over 1,000 returns for older Michiganians every year. This service generates over $1 million in tax refunds for clients.
In his spare time, Mike enjoys travel all over the United States and abroad and completed his first trip to Africa in August.
Congratulations Mike, and thank you for your tremendous volunteerism!
