A MOMENT WITH THE PRESIDENT
|
|
From the Desk of John Hernandez, President of the FWHCC
|
This month, I would like to share some of my thoughts on altruism. As we all know, this time of year is abundant with fundraisers for worthy charities and important causes. These events are not only opportunities to dress up, network and learn more about valuable local initiatives, they are also reminders of significant problems facing our community. With this understanding, I would like to note that there are many ways in which we can give back throughout the year.
In some cases, I have found that donating time can be much more valuable than donating money. At some point, we are all presented with opportunities to share experiences, inspiration and hope. Sometimes it is difficult to fit these opportunities into our busy schedules. However, these opportunities can mean the most and have the greatest impact on our community. For example, our recent panel discussions of Latinas in Leadership and Men of Color Mentoring, or the contribution of our knowledge to a robotics team, or the sharing of resources for a school fundraiser. The point is, there are many ways to give back to the people, organizations and programs that are in place to make our community better.
In the words of Arthur Ashe, "From what we get, we can make a living; what we give, however, makes a life."

Latinas in Entrepreneurship
|
In the second of the two-part Leadership installment of the Five Pillar Lecture Series, the FWHCC was joined by a panel of three successful Latina Entrepreneurs: Sandra McGlothlin, Erica Cisneros, and Crystal Marra, moderated by Nancy Galvan. These women, who have successfully started and run their own enterprises, intimately discussed their experiences growing a business and candidly talked about the risks and failures associated with their experiences. The conversation involved topics about impactful mentors, mistakes that were used as learning experiences, the challenges of work-life balance and and the most useful advice received and used by these women. Thank you to each of our panelists who took the time to join our members and community to speak on a personal level about what it is to be a Latina Entrepreneur. Thank you to our wonderful sponsors for making this event possible: Coca-Cola and the Cleburne Railroaders.
The FWHCC wants to continue the positive impact of the Latinas in Leadership mini-series and plans to continue the breakfast panels in 2017. Please send any feedback or comments to Nicole Antonini at nicole.antonini@fwhcc.org.

Dale Carnegie - Get it Done 2017
|
| The Fort Worth Hispanic Chamber has partnered with Dale Carnegie Training to bring valuable workshops to our members. Jointly, we have offered opportunities to learn presentation skills, leadership skills and now want to offer our members the opportunity to join Dale Carnegie for a special goal-setting workshop, just in time for the new year.
As the New Year approaches, we aspire to reinvent ourselves - we set new goals and expectations. We write our goals down and put them on our wall for all to see. We pump ourselves full of motivation to make this year a success.
A couple months later, we almost inevitably find ourselves demoralized as our goals now seem impossible to achieve.
How do we set goals and stay the course? What's the key to making this year a success?
Achieving goals starts with creating an organizational vision - our destination point. The next step is creating action steps that serve as measurable progress points in reaching our organizational vision. Finally, we identify those individuals that play a critical part in us achieving our goals. We set ourselves up for success by intentionally creating a tactical plan to gain cooperation from those individuals.
Get it Done 2017 leads attendees through a time-tested process of creating a vision, planning for success, and gaining the collaboration of their teams. This two-hour breakfast workshop will be co-facilitated by Ryan Akins, Regional President of Dale Carnegie Training, and Ashley Easley, certified professional organizer of MasterPeace Solutions.
To plan for success, join us on
November 17th and Get it Done.
FWHCC Members will receive a 50% discount with promo code FWHCC. Click here to register.
"If you believe in what you are doing, then let nothing hold you up in your work. Much of the best work in the world has been done against seeming impossibilities. The thing is to get the work done." - Dale Carnegie

Men of Color Mentoring Program
|
|
This past month, the FWHCC had the honor of supporting the Men of Color Mentoring Program by convening a panel of three successful men to speak to the MCM students. Our panelists included our very own President John Hernandez, Oscar Vazquez of BNSF and Ozzy Ramirez of Lockheed Martin. These highly intelligent and respectable men shared some of their philosophies and lessons learned from challenges they have faced. By sharing their own past difficulties, we hope that it removed barriers of identification and allowed the students to connect at a fundamentally human level. We modeled this conversation in such a way that would enable the students to understand that regardless of the obstacles they may face through their own journeys, they too can persevere and overcome.
Thank you to our member, Cash America and Albert Laguna, for donating a door prize for the event: an Xbox One!
"If you inspire people, you don't have to give them anything else, just stay out of their way!" - Neil deGrasse Tyson.

The FWHCC would
like to take a moment to share some insight on the important relationship we hold with our other local chambers. We are honored to be one of three chambers in Fort Worth: the Fort Worth Chamber of Commerce, the Fort Worth Metropolitan Black Chamber of Commerce and the Fort Worth Hispanic Chamber of Commerce. At this time of rapid expansion and evolution, our community as a whole faces many important and critical challenges. It is with this understanding that we unite to discuss ideas, concepts and strategies for moving forward in the efforts aimed to strengthen this community. For our community to move forward in a positive and innovative manner, we must cultivate compassion, respect and appreciation for each other. It is only with solidarity that we can truly ensure every single person in our community benefits from all our efforts. We all can contribute to progress, but this requires that every one of us realize this fundamental concept: we are all in this together.

LB Cleighton shares: "John is really fun. He gives me a high five before leaving after each outing."
BB John shares: "It's not what you say, but what you do that impacts kids the most. It's all of my actions that Cleighton emulates. It's great seeing him use his manners more and develop socially.
Favorite Match Activities: Cleighton's favorite activity with John was attending the Maverick's game. They were able to sit on the floor level with tickets from a donor, and they were able to meet some of the players and see the action up close!
Impact on Little's life: Cleighton's Mom is so thankful for John's match with Cleighton. She has seen Cleighton become even more motivated in school and in earning his own money. Cleighton often asks to call his Big Brother immediately to report good grades and accomplishments even if he has plans to see John later that week. During one outing this past spring, Cleighton talked to John about wanting to purchase a particular item, and John told him how, when he was a young boy, he would mow his neighbors' yards to earn money. The very next day, Cleighton pulled out his family's mower and walked the neighborhood asking to mow lawns. That day he earned $17. The next day, he did the same, and earned $97! Cleighton continued to do this and has saved and bought, and saved some more. Recently, John invited him to his workplace for a few hours. John coached Cleighton and had him make a few sales calls to John's clients and taught Cleighton strong working skills. During another outing, John and Cleighton helped and contributed to building over 10,000 sandwiches for those in need! John says "It was really cool to see how happy he (Cleighton) was afterwards and how he realized how good it feels to help others. He even was asking when the next one was so that we could go back and help again."
Highlight/Best Match Memory: The best memory is definitely flying an airplane with the company's president. While Cleighton co-piloted and John sat in the second seat, the pilot allowed Cleighton to control the plane and taught him how to go up and down with the controls. John was getting sick from the movements, but seeing Cleighton smiling ear to ear was worth it!
