LET'S TALK ABOUT SHAPES!

Let’s talk, read, and sing about SHAPES! When you talk to your baby about shapes, you build his early math knowledge and prepare him for elementary school and beyond. Playing with blocks can help your baby learn about shapes and early engineering concepts! What does your baby like building when she plays with blocks?

For more ideas on how to talk, read, and sing together visit: TALKING IS TEACHING

COOKING AT HOME

Cooking Matters Recipe:

BLACK BEAN AND VEGETABLE QUESADILLA

45 Minutes 6 Servings

Kids love to help in the kitchen. When you make lunch, ask your child, “Would you like your quesadilla cut in four or five triangles?” Count together as you cut.

Ingredients:

½ (15½-ounce) can black beans, no salt added

2 medium zucchini

1 bunch fresh spinach (about 4 cups)

1 ear fresh corn or 1 cup canned corn

4 ounces low-fat cheddar cheese

1 Tablespoon canola oil

Pinch ground cayenne pepper

1–2 teaspoons water

½ teaspoon ground black pepper

6 (8-inch) whole wheat flour tortillas

Non-stick cooking spray

Instructions:

  1. In a colander, drain and rinse black beans.
  2. Rinse zucchini. Cut into thin slices or shred with a grater.
  3. Rinse and chop fresh spinach. If using fresh parsley or cilantro, rinse and chop now.
  4. If using fresh corn, peel. Use a knife to cut corn kernels off of the cob. If using canned corn, drain.
  5. Grate cheese.
  6. In a large skillet over medium-high heat, heat oil. Add zucchini and cayenne pepper. Cook until zucchini is semi-soft, about 5 minutes.
  7. Add corn and spinach. Cover and cook until tender, stirring a few times, about 5 minutes more. Remove from heat.
  8. Add black beans to the veggie mixture. Stir to combine. Smash beans lightly with a fork. Add 1–2 teaspoons water to make a bean-and-veggie paste.
  9. Season mixture with black pepper. If using parsley or cilantro, add now. Transfer mixture to medium bowl. Reserve skillet. 10. Spread vegetable mixture evenly on half of each tortilla. Fold tortillas over. Press lightly with spatula to flatten.
  10. Spray skillet lightly with non-stick cooking spray. Heat over medium high heat. Add one folded tortilla. Cook about 4 minutes per side, or until both sides of tortilla are golden brown. Repeat until all quesadillas are cooked.
  11. Cut each quesadilla into wedges. Serve while hot.

ABOUT BACK SLEEP

Safe to Sleep

The most effective action that parents and caregivers can take to reduce baby’s risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) and other sleep-related death is to always place baby on their back to sleep, for naps and at night.

The back sleep position is the safest sleep position for all babies, including those born preterm and those with reflux, until they are 1 year old.

IS YOUR CHILD ON TRACK?

crawling-hallway-baby.jpg

Families with children between the ages of two and five months residing in Saginaw County can complete a FREE Ages and Stages developmental screening or a social-emotional screening. Screenings take ten minutes to complete, and the results are back within a week. Results tell parents what to expect at each stage of development. Often times, early diagnosis can help give a child the best opportunity to reach their potential.

COUNT THE KICKS

One out of every 169 pregnancies ends in stillbirth in the U.S., and that rate is two times higher for Black expectant parents.

The link between fetal movement and a healthy baby is clear, but research continues to uncover more about the importance of tracking baby’s movements. Count the Kicks uses the latest research to help achieve our mission.

Count the Kicks provides free, evidence-based resources for expectant parents to stay informed and monitor their baby’s well-being.
