Message from the Director Emerita/Interim
Susan Aylward
WISHING SUSAN MORELAND STRAUB ALL THE BEST
Who would have thought that 10 years after retiring from a 35-year career at the North Kingstown Free Library, I would be back in the Director’s chair for a brief time, keeping the library on an even keel while the Trustees select a new director to replace Susan Moreland Straub?
Susan Straub has had two tours of duty serving our library. The first began in 1998 when she was a student in the Graduate School of Library and Information Studies at the University of Rhode Island. She served in every capacity on the staff for 17 years, moving up through the ranks and landing in the second most responsible and complex job at the library—Deputy Director. She held that post for six years until her resignation at the end of 2015.
She was an invaluable and trusted advisor during my tenure as director, so I was absolutely thrilled when she was hired to be the director of our beloved library in September 2020. We all knew the library was in the most capable hands, and we thought this job would be hers until she retired from her career. Because of a family emergency that has made it impossible for her continue in this complex and challenging position, Susan has heartbreakingly had to give up her dream job. Just as she will continue to cheer on the North Kingstown Free Library for its continued success as one of the finest public libraries in Rhode Island, all of us who are her friends will wish her strength and joy and love as she opens a new chapter in her life.
I am happy to report that the library trustees are in the process of selecting a new library director. I will continue to serve as Interim Director until that process is complete. We should have good news to report about this in next month’s newsletter, when the Friends of the Library also kick off their membership drive.
Thank you, as always, for your wonderful support of our library. It means all the world to us.
