Tae Kwon Do instructor earns Grand Master rank
Youth Bureau Tae Kwon Do instructor David Warden became a Grand Master this fall - the highest level in the Korean martial art.
Warden has been teaching Tae Kwon Do at the Youth Bureau for more than 12 years. His classes focus on body awareness and the
mental aspects of martial arts building self esteem, confidence and respect.
"I absolutely love teaching at the Youth Bureau," he said. "When I started, I had no concept of getting this far."
Warden began studying Tae Kwon Do in 1973 and earned his black belt in 1977. He went on to teach at a Tae Kwon Do club at Cornell. There he was introduced to Grand Master Hyun Ok Shin, who runs a school in Queens, NY. Shin is originally from Korea, and studied in the first Tae Kwon Do school there.
Grand Master is the ninth level of black belt in Tae Kwon Do. For his Grand Master test, Warden performed two memorized patterns of movement, demonstrated self-defense moves to disarm an attacker with a knife, and completed a three-part sequence of breaking boards.
"In every test, you are basically demonstrating what you've learned," Warden explained.
"You earn the right to test by your practice and training. It was both humbling and an honor to me that Grandmaster Shin felt I was ready to advance to this level."
