The Dean's Column Dear Colleagues, The following was printed in the bulletin of Sweetest Heart of Mary, Detroit at some point in the 1930's: This is My Parish It i composed of people like me. We make it what it is. It will be friendly, if I am friendly. Its pews will be filled, if I help to fill them. It will make generous gifts to many causes, if I am a generous giver. It will bring other people to its worship and fellowship if I bring them. It will be a Church of loyalty and love, of fearlessness and faith, and a Church with a noble spirit, if I , who make it what it is, am filled with these qualities. Therefore, with the help of God, I shall dedicate myself to the task of being all the things I want my Church to be. Those words, printed 90 years ago, seem an appropriate challenge to our chapter. Our chapter is composed of people like you. Our chapter events will be well attended if you attend. Our chapter will grow if you invite people to join our ranks. Our chapter will be a place of welcome to young people and new members if you are friendly to your colleagues. You have an opportunity to live into that charge on Sunday, November 14 when we will gather as a chapter for the first time since the start of the pandemic. Come get reacquainted with your colleagues, enjoy a reception after the service, and look through boxes and boxes of free organ music. During this event, we will have a moment to remember those members who have passed away over the past 18 months. We will, of course, remember George Jonte-Crane and Mary Whitmore. Officer Installation & Member Memorial Sunday, November 14 4:00 pm Angelica Lutheran 8400 Park Ave. Allen Park A vesper service that will include the installation of our officers and board members along with a remembrance of those members who have passed away during the past year. We will also look forward to and celebrate our future. Following the service there will be a reception with multiple boxes of free organ music to peruse.Take home a new-to-you gem! *Metro Detroit freeways are frequently under construction, consult Google maps or MDOT to check for road closures*

Meadow Brook Hall Holidays Would You Like to Play the Area's Largest Residential Organ? Once again, the original-condition 1919 Aeolian organ in Meadow Brook Hall will be featured during the annual Holiday Walk from Thanksgiving until Christmas. Meadow Brook Hall is a National Historic Landmark. It is the 88,000 sq.ft. former home of Alfred and Matilda Dodge Wilson, and is on the campus of Oakland University.   In past years Detroit Area organists have generously joined in volunteering to man the console and provide holiday music for the hall's visitors. Around the end of October, interested organists will be contacted to set up schedules. If you have an interest in playing this historic instrument and would like to be added to the contact list, please contact Pete Townsend at [email protected] so your name can be added to the email list. If you have an interest in a short practice or trial session prior to then, please also contact Pete.

The Roster is Coming, The Roster is Coming The chapter’s membership roster is getting ready for publication. It is mailed to current members. (We don’t share it with non-members). To be the most useful, the information should be as informative and complete as possible.  Our source for this information is what you put in your record at AGOHQ through the OnCard registration system. In the Contact section check that any AGO certification, Other Credentials, and Email address are correct. In the Address Information section, please make sure that you’ve provided one or more phone numbers as well as your correct address. It is also very important to include any music related employment with your title and related addresses and phone numbers in the 2nd and 3rd parts of the Address section.  Deadline for updates will be soon so your help will be appreciated by the roster editor. If you need help in making changes in OnCard please send an email to [email protected].

Sunday, November 7, 5:00 p.m. - Christ Church Cranbrook All Souls Requiem featuring Duruflé's Requiem scored for chorus, organ and orchestra. Friday, November 19, 7:00 p.m. - St. Francis of Assisi, Ann Arbor Marijim Thoene will present a lecture on “The Identity of St. Cecilia Based on the 13th-Century Beaupre Antiphonary Created for Cistercian Nuns.” Chants will be sung by soprano Catherine Moss and Marijim. Images of St. Cecilia will be shown and medieval organ music will be played by Dr. Thoene. The program is hosted by the Ann Arbor AGO on November 19, 2021 at St. Francis of Assisi on 2270 East Stadium Blvd. in Ann Arbor, MI. Free and open to the public.  Friday, November 19, 7:30 p.m. - Our Lady Star of the Sea Organ 20th Anniversary Concert celebrating the 2 manual/43 rank Karl Wilhelm organ. Performing will be organists Dr. Ronald Prowse (who performed the dedication recital), Matt Jakubisin (former Music Minister, Our Lady Star of the Sea and presently Director of Music at the St Andrew’s Cathedral, Grand Rapids), Glenn Miller (Music Minister, Our Lady Star of the Sea), and soprano Angela Theis. Free will offering; Star of the Sea is located at 467 Fairford Road, Grosse Pointe Woods.   Sunday, December 12, 4:00 p.m. - Our Lady of La Sallette The Ministry of Music at Our Lady of La Salette Church in Berkley Michigan is pleased to present Dr. David O. Wagner as organist for the rededication of the 1967 M. P. Moller pipe organ that was recently restored on Sunday, December 12 at 4:00 p.m. David Wagner is a concert organist who has performed throughout the United States, in England, Wales, Scotland, Ireland, France, Hungary and in Russia. He holds the Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the University of Michigan where he studied with Marilyn Mason. In addition to his work as a solo performer, Wagner has also been organist and harpsichordist with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra. Dave is the recipient of the Palmer Christian award from the University of Michigan School of Music, for postdoctoral achievement in the field of music performance, and the Arts Achievement Award from Wayne State University. As a classical music broadcaster, Dave Wagner has a national reputation and is heard regularly as the morning/afternoon host on WRCJ in Detroit. The organ concert will feature works of the Advent and Christmas season. David will delight listeners with his amazing technical skill and engaging, colorful commentary. This concert is free and open to the public. Our Lady of La Salette is located at 2600 Harvard Road at Coolidge Highway in Berkley.
