City partners with Bismarck State College for CDL program
Earlier this year, the City of Mandan partnered with Bismarck State College (BSC) TrainND for the use of a semi-truck for the Class A commercial driver’s license (CDL) training program.
The semi-truck being used is a 2009 International 8600, mostly used in the fall to haul biosolids from the waste water treatment facility.
“We currently have five equipment operators needing to obtain their CDL,” says Public Works Director Mitch Bitz, “so this collaboration with BSC is proving to be very valuable to the City.”

'Holiday Lights on Main' begins after Thanksgiving
If you’ve driven by Dykshoorn Park recently, you’ve probably seen the holiday light displays being installed. These larger-than-life, interactive displays will light up Dykshoorn Park beginning Nov. 25 at 6 p.m. with a lighting ceremony. The display will be activated from 5-10 p.m. each night through Jan. 7.
The vibrant, immersive holiday space will be driven by the community’s desire for unique experiences and giving back to the community with non-perishable food drives and non-profit organization partnerships:
-
Holiday Lights in the Pantry. Bring non-perishable food items to the Holiday Lights on Main attraction each night. Food items collected will be distributed to those in need through Aid Inc.
-
Adopt a Night at the Lights. When a local non-profit, school organization, or charity adopts a night at the lights they provide some volunteer help and free-will donations that night will go to the adopting group.
-
Christmas Trees of Charity. A friendly Christmas tree decorating competition hosted in the Morton Mandan Public Library. Voting for the best decorated tree will be open from Thanksgiving through the New Year. The winning tree will receive $1,500 towards their organization’s cause.

Residents encouraged to register for CodeRED notifications
CodeRED community notification registration is a system used to contact residents and businesses by phone to inform of certain events that may impact the safety of persons or protection of property.
Alerts are sent out to specific user locations. If an alert is sent out, only users in the specific alert area will receive the notification.
Text ‘AlertMortonND’ to 99411 or click here to sign up for the CodeRED notification system. Users may also download the CodeRED mobile alert app to indicate preferences for City of Mandan and Morton County CodeRED alerts. Messages will include emergency, general and missing person notifications to Mandan and Morton County residents.
In early October, CodeRED was used when a water main broke along the east end of Memorial Highway. Public Works Director Mitch Bitz was able to use CodeRED to send a notification to property owners in the area. This alerted subscribers about the break and plans for repair. While this may not be used for all water main breaks, it’s an example of use to inform residents of situations that can impact health, safety and personal property.

Snow removal reminders & plowing information
As winter weather approaches, Mandan Public Works would like to remind residents about the snow removal process and ways you can help assist crews:
- Generally 4 inches of snow accumulation requires plowing of all routes.
- Remove vehicles from the street as soon as possible after snowfall.
- Residents using driveway markers to identify curbs and driveways helps with plowing efforts.
- Snow removal and sanding vehicles must stop and back frequently. Stay a minimum of 50-feet behind them, and remember a typical snow plow is wider than most driving lanes.
- Property owners are required to remove snow and ice from their sidewalk within 24 hours after its deposit. If not removed, the City may do so and charge the property owner.
- Please clear snow from the area around mailboxes and fire hydrants.
- Do not put snow from your property on the street. Snow may be placed in the unpaved portion of the boulevard within the public right-of-way.
