The Monthly Connect

Connecting for Kids Newsletter

November 2023

Connecting for Kids provides resources, support and community

to families in Northeast Ohio who have concerns about their child.

Dear Sarah,

Whether you just received a dyslexia screening showing your child is at risk, or you’ve known about their academic struggles for a while, finding the right support can feel like an uphill battle. For parents like you and me, it often means a big learning curve and some pretty intense coordination!

That’s why I’m excited to share a new partnership with Westlake Porter Public Library that has allowed us to come alongside families who are concerned about learning disabilities in some new and exciting ways.

First of all, we launched dyslexia and dyscalculia guides in our Resource Guide collection (a dysgraphia guide is coming soon!). These guides include “red flags” sections that you can use to start a conversation with your child’s primary care provider (PCP) and solutions to help manage symptoms. Each guide also includes a Resources & FAQ section, with some of the common questions and suggestions we hear from CFK families.

Along with the resource guides, Westlake Porter Public Library is also co-presenting a Learning Disability Provider Showcase on November 29th. The showcase is a lot like our resource fairs, but it will feature local providers who serve families with concerns about learning disabilities. This is a great chance to meet tutors, learn about schools, find advocates – and so much more. Westlake Porter Public Librarians will be on hand to offer books that aid in literacy along with children’s activities

If you’ve ever been like me – trying to figure out your next steps after hearing about a learning concern – I hope you’ll join us for the showcase!

Is Math Hard for Your Child? Read Our New Dyscalculia Guide

Dyscalculia is a learning disability that makes it hard to do math. People with dyscalculia may have difficulty with numbers or with other math-related concepts like size and speed. We don’t know as much about dyscalculia as we know about dyslexia, but experts think that it may impact 3-7% of all people.

Learning Aid Ohio Applications Due Tuesday

Access Additional Funds for Tutoring and Educational Resources

  2. You use the Learning Aid Ohio website to search qualified providers and set up an interview.
  3. After choosing the provider you want to work with, use the Learning Aid Ohio site to schedule services.
  4. Your chosen provider is paid from your child's account balance until the funds are used up.

Full details are available on the Learning Aid Ohio website.

Ways to Give Back and Support CFK

Donate Directly or Set Up a Giving Tuesday Social Media Fundraiser

Have you attended a free Connecting for Kids program? Did you receive one-on-one help from one of our Family Resources Specialists? Have you taken advantage of the many guides found on the website, the directory to find area providers or listened to one of our podcasts? Were you helped by the connections you formed in one of our support groups or a CFK Facebook group?

If you answered "yes" to any of those questions, please help us this November by donating directly to Connecting for Kids or even setting up a Facebook fundraiser for Giving Tuesday (Tuesday, November 28) to ask your family and friends to help.

Welcome Anna Barr to CFK's Staff

As a new Program Assistant, Anna Barr will be helping families find resources for their children. You may see her posting on Facebook or she may be the one answering your questions when you reach out to CFK for an Ask Us 1:1 appointment.

Anna is an animal lover and book reader. Her background is in nonprofit management and she has focused her professional life on the support of parents and women's health, which has taken forms from clinical settings to in-home postpartum support. Anna lives with her husband and three children, and their (far too many) pets. In her free time, Anna can usually be found with a hot cup of tea enjoying her front porch, or walking to a local small business in her neighborhood.

What do you do to relax?

Paint and work on video games based on my child's art.

What benefits has Connecting for Kids brought to you and your family?

Just the knowledge that there are others out there with the same experiences and that people like CFK want to help!

The hardest thing for me to learn was...

My child isn't just his disability- there is a vibrant, smart kid who wants to be treated like every other kid.

The best thing about parenting a child who struggles is...

We've learned that every child has something to contribute, which is why when my child showed an interest in art, I started using his drawings as characters in my games.

Do you have any recommended resources such as blogs, websites, or books that we can share?

I really enjoy Tamara Hull's blog.
