Building With Heart
Written by: Jeanette McFarlane, My Honeywood Fundraising Volunteer
You might have heard by now or perhaps even seen the My Honeywood campaign, designed to raise funds for the revitalization of the Honeywood Arena. Information on the multi-year, community inspired initiative can be found on the dedicated website www.myhoneywood.ca or if you are on Facebook on the @myhoneywood page.
The logo design concept is called "At The Heart Of It". After listening to members of the community and the campaign committee all the stories always came back to the arena. It is more than just hockey and more than just a building, it is a community hub filled with history and loving memories. The tagline, "Building With Heart" wonderfully captures the emotional ties to our shared history and our goals for future generations. It is a building with heart...lots of memories, and what we are trying to accomplish...doing the right thing now, for future generations.
We set off to soft launch the campaign September 27th 2024 at the Donald Cooper Event put on by Hill N' Dale Landscaping. We had an information table set up and distributed some information pertaining to revitalization project. People were thrilled to learn that efforts were being made to save the arena and make upgrades and renovations to ensure it remains the heart of the community for the next 100 years. A lot has been done already, including $1.7 Million dollars invested in new pipes, ice pad, rink boards and repairs to the leaking roof, but we're only just getting started!
We have a vision to transform the arena into a multi-generational space that unites the community and celebrates our achievements. It is a space that nurtures positive relationships through sport and creates a sense of belonging and wellness. It's about getting back to our roots and being there for one another. If you've been following along on the Facebook "MyHoneywood" page you can see the numerous stories come to life:
-
The story of Albert Meeser a young man in 1965 straight from Germany and speaking little English, knew that they wanted to help out the rebuilding of the arena after the fire.
-
Norma Godbold, the Keeper of the Puck! Her late husband Peter scored the first goal at the first game in 1949.
-
Aaron Downey growing up and playing in Honeywood, brings home the Stanely Cup in 2008 playing for the Detroit Red Wings.
-
Mary Lynn and Ralph Armstrong were there the day the arena burned to the ground and were one of the first people on site.
-
Mike de Laat, grieving widow with two young children dedicating a tournament to his late wife to raise funds for breast cancer.
-
Amber Gallaugher and the winter storm of the century getting stuck at the arena as it transformed into an Emergency shelter the night before her wedding.
It's not a new notion of community, it's something we've always been, but perhaps we need to get back to the heart of it. The last few years have been challenging and we need to come together now more than ever, not necessarily for us, but for our children and grandchildren. We need a place for them, a real community centre to make their own memories and celebrate their own achievements.
There are plenty of way you can help. Every donation makes a positive impact, and every donation receives a receipt from Canada Helps (Charitable partner). You simply go to the website www.myhoneywood.ca and click on donate.
Or you can purchase some Honeywood merchandise, proceeds from each sale go to the arena. To find the merchandise, once again go to the website www.myhoneywood.ca
You can start your own fundraising initiative, sell a product or item and donate proceeds back to the arena on behalf of your business or rent out the upstairs Norduff Room and put on a party - we'll come!
You can be a sponsor - showcase your local business in the arena on a rink board or sign.
Join us however you can as we raise funds for our next phase called, EQUALITY.
We need to build proper change rooms for our young female athletes, as they currently use a storage closet with no washroom. We have a target goal of $5 Million to build a separate wing to the building and redo all the change rooms to make them bigger and more appropriate for our users.
Be part of it. Be part of "Building With Heart, Since 1912".
Follow us on Facebook @myhoneywood, donate today at www.myhoneywood.ca and share! Tell a friend and let them know we have heart!
