During this busy time of year, calendars fill up quickly. Having time set aside to enjoy with residents helps us to strengthen our connection to one another and builds a greater sense of community among neighbors. This season provides a wonderful opportunity to thank volunteers who have supported the activities, events, and programs of the past year.
The Friends of Clarendon event (Clarendon Hill Towers - Somerville, MA) is among my favorite. Our team comes together to recognize those residents who have made a difference within our community. This includes Tenant Association members, library volunteers, mobile food pantry hosts, and special event coordinators. Our staff and vendors who have gone above and beyond in their service to the community are also a part of the fun.
We gather each year and have created a sense of togetherness and tradition. Our luncheon connects a wide variety of guests from near and far who otherwise do not have the chance to meet as a group. New ideas are exchanged as is our appreciation for one another and we leave excited for the possibilities the new year will bring.
These relationships are central to the success of our partnership with Clarendon Hill Towers Tenant Association. Over the years, we have joined in their long-established traditions. Together with Soloco /J&M Co. (our vendor) and the Major General Henry Knox Lodge (their community partner), we host a holiday dessert party at the New England Center and Home for Veterans (NECHV) to show our appreciation and gratitude for their service.
This event, first held in 1991, includes live entertainment and a popular karaoke session. Additionally, all 300+ NECHV residents are given gift sets including hats and gloves along with a chance to win one of the many great prize drawings. The festive 50-foot-long dessert table is the highlight for many and includes a variety of delicious homemade cakes, pies, pastries, cookies, and other sweets.
Our residents and staff look forward to returning there each year. As the event approaches, we fundraise to help support the program then coordinate volunteer schedules and our baking efforts. It provides us the chance to give back to those who have given us so much and brings an opportunity for our community to come together in the spirit of the season.
