Calm Waters News and Updates
Calm Waters in Yukon | Winter Grief Workshop
Calm Waters recognizes how difficult the holidays can be for those in grief due to the death of a loved one, or because of a recent divorce, deployment, incarceration or deportation.

On Saturday, Nov. 9, we hosted a Winter Grief Workshop in Yukon, at the First United Methodist Church of Yukon and welcomed almost 40 people, most of whom were new to Calm Waters.

Each family shared their grief story and during the workshop we went through a special grief workbook to help each person consider how to navigate the upcoming holidays. Then, each family created a holiday wreath and were given their own set of memory sticks to be used during the next family gathering. This very special Yukon event would not have been possible without our generous sponsor, Yanda & Son Funeral Home .
Chesapeake Energy Volunteer Project for Calm Waters
Last Friday, a team of Chesapeake employees volunteered their day to paint five Calm Waters support group rooms. The CHK volunteers painted accent walls the “Calm Waters” blue and then stenciled in the Calm Waters logo with white paint. We could not be more thrilled with the final product!

Calm Waters wants to thank Melissa, Holly, Jessica, Charla, Stefani, Lauren and her mom, Julie, for ensuring our many support group rooms remain a warm, welcoming space for families in grief!

Charlotte Lankard's Volunteer Appreciation Party
Charlotte Lankard, founder of Calm Waters, opened her home and shared hosting duties with Judy Mee, past executive director, for the Nov. 16 Calm Waters Volunteer Appreciation Party.

Calm Waters volunteers come from all walks of life, but all share a sincere desire to help families through their grief journey.

Board members, staff and group facilitators enjoyed learning more about the beginnings of Calm Waters from founders Sondra Woodruff and Charlotte Lankard, and the staff of Calm Waters provided programming updates, such as the expansion of the divorce support groups. The celebration was catered by Ganache Patisserie.

Grief and Divorce Support Groups News
Support Groups End in December, Resume in Late January
  • Monday nights from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m., Calm Waters hosts grief support groups for children 3 to 18, parents, grandparents and adults.
  • Thursday nights from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m., Calm Waters hosts divorce support groups for the entire family.
All regularly scheduled Grief and Divorce support group meetings at the Center will take a six-week break between December 16 and January 27. Because the end of our support groups are just two weeks away, instead of adding a new children and adults to a group that will only meet once before the holiday break, we will schedule their in-person orientation the week of Jan. 13. with plans to begin their Calm Waters support group journey in late January.

In the interim, please should anyone need assistance, such as a 30 to 60 minute consultation about how to talk to children about death or setting boundaries through the holidays, counselor referrals, additional questions about Calm Waters Grief support groups, etc., please reach out via phone at 405-841-4800 or email Jordan Park, Assistant Program Director, at [email protected]
Calm Waters Volunteer Spotlight
Jonathan Brown

“I want to help kids and adults that are going through some of the things that I have been going through in my life.”

Jonathan is pursuing his sociology degree from the University of Oklahoma, with the goal of a PhD.

This Tulsa high school football star has dedicated his free time to Calm Waters for two years as a grief group facilitator at the Center and a school group facilitator in multiple metro area schools. And just this past summer, he volunteered for Camp Courage, Calm Waters’ 3-day art camp for children experiencing a loss.

Jonathan volunteers for Calm Waters because he was a child of divorce and experienced grief due to the death of a loved one in his teens. He wished he’d had someone around to go through his grief journey with him during his formative years.

Thank you Johnny for paying it forward and for having a heart for children in grief.

Stuart Bell

“Calm Waters is a wonderful program that I could have benefited from when I was a kid because it helps the whole family, you see, my parents divorced when I was 4-years-old and then my dad died when I was 12.”

Meet Stuart Bell, a 21-year Calm Waters donor and volunteer group facilitator. Stuart has dedicated two evenings a week for at least 777 weeks of his life to Calm Waters Grief and Divorce support groups.

Stuart has led countless grief and divorce support groups and over the years and he’s witnessed firsthand how our support group model changes lives, especially teens.

“With so many decisions they have to make every day on top of dealing with peer pressure, I’m so grateful we get to teach these kids tools to get through challenges. Their Calm Waters experience and the coping skills and tools they learn will be utilized for their rest of their lives, and I’m glad we get to be a part of it all.”

Thank you Stuart for your loyalty and dedication to Calm Waters.
