"Before We Were Yours" by Lisa Wingate moves between late 1930s Tennessee and present day South Carolina. In late 1930s Tennessee, the five Foss siblings are kidnapped from their family's shantyboat and taken to the Tennessee Children's Home Society orphanage. Far from being a place of care and concern, the orphanage is place where the siblings must fight to stay together.
