The Stolen Heir &
The Prisoner's Throne
by Holly Black
Return to the world of Elfhame with this spinoff of the The Folk of the Air series. Book two of the duology is Prince Oak's story, as he balances political intrigue and love. Holly Black fans will gobble this one up. Newcomers should begin with The Cruel Prince.
| | |
Royal Blood &
Royal Scandal
by Aimee Carter
Five months later, and Evan is still in England, trying to find her place with her father, the King, and and her half-sister, the heir to the throne. The tabloids continue to trail her and Benedict (her cousin who framed her for murder) is back. Another fun royal romp from Carter (and book three is in the works!)

Thieves' Gambit &
Heist Royale
by Kayvion Lewis
Professional thief Ross Quest finds herself again in another contest, this time forcing her to compete against renown international thieves. With the support of her newly found friends from book one, Ross grows in confidence and in knowing who she really is. Another fast-paced adventure story from Lewis.

Orbiting Jupiter &
Jupiter Rising
by Gary D. Schmidt
If you had your heart broken in Orbiting Jupiter, you may welcome this return to Jack Hurd and the story of his beloved foster sister, Jupiter. Set three years after Joseph's death, Jack is again forced to face complexities beyond his years. Have the tissues ready as Schmidt packs another emotional punch!

Darker by Four by June CL Tan is a fast-paced, dark fantasy story steeped in Chinese mythology, about gods, monsters, revenge, and friendship. There’s Rui, the reaper with a mission for vengeance, Yiran, the boy with something to prove, and the mysterious mage Zizi, with power and secrets. There’s also a missing god of the underworld. And lots of undead monsters. And somehow these three are right at the heart of it all. It’s a book that’s atmospheric and intense and can be read in one sitting!

I'm 2/3 of the way through Karen McManus's latest, Nothing More to Tell and it's as gripping as always. My favorite remains One of Us is Lying, but she is definitely a gifted YA thriller writer.
Brynn, 17, is stuck returning to the Massachusetts private school she left after eighth grade, not long after the murder of her favorite teacher. At the time, police thought they knew it was the fault of a drifter, but Brynn's not so sure. Cue the complicated and cute boy who discovered the teacher's body, and who Brynn just can't resist. Strange pieces of information keep coming to the surface, and something just doesn't add up. As with all of McManus's books, you won't be sorry to read it!

Here are some of Justin's latest favorites! | |
Plain Jane and the Mermaid
by Vera Brosgol
A mermaid adventure fantasy story about an "ordinary" girl who learns to gain her independence and accept her self worth. The supporting cast is fantastic (Mr. Whiskers, the seal is my favorite), the art is vibrant and I loved the way Vera captures dynamic facial expressions. I would not be surprised to see this on a YALSA best of 2024 list! Gr 6+

Avatar the Last Airbender The Bounty Hunter and the Tea Brewer
by Faith Erin Hicks & Peter Wartman
Many Avatar fans rank Iroh pretty high up as their favorite character and everyone knows about "Tales of Ba Sing Se". This is a one-off that is the closest to that episode and after you finish you definitely want to watch an episode adapted from this. Gr 6+

| |
Doctor Strange Fall Sunrise
by Tradd Moore & Heather Moore
A self-contained story with a psychedelic journey that manages to be a satisfying character story while also building up a mythos of a new eclectic cast of characters. Gr 8+
Available on Hoopla
| |
A Haunted Girl
by Ethan and Naomi Sacks & Marco Lorenzana
A story about anxiety, depression, and mental health told through the lens of a horror story. It had a very Neon Genesis Evangelion vibe (teens dealing with mental struggles while also being the last line of defense before the end of the world). Gr 10+
Available on Hoopla
| |
Hunger and the Dusk
by G. Willow Wilson & Chris Wildgoose
A dark fantasy story with a few twists and turns that I can't wait to see get a proper pay off. The world feels lived-in and the vying factions have interesting histories that I am eager to learn more about. Gr 10+
Available on Hoopla

Marvel's Voices: Community
(various contributors)
A collection of stories and one-shots celebrating Latin/X stories and creators. I really love this series since it's a great way to discover new heroes and some of your favorites in stories that are focused on their culture while also being superhero stories.

Holiday Shopping in Our Bookstore |
There’s a chill in the air and the leaves are falling, so sometime in the next few weeks, we’ll be stocking the Friends bookstore with holiday items. You’ll find a new holiday cart in the store, and look for additional items on the shelves.
We won’t be able to have our fall book sale this year because of the ChiRP construction, but we’re keeping the store well stocked, and we appreciate your ongoing support through your store purchases and Friends memberships. Happy fall!
