Coronavirus and Older Adults

Is There a Safe Way to Be Home for the Holidays?
|
|
One of American culture’s most cherished traditions is for a mix of young and old people from different households to sit close together and share food in a poorly ventilated space without masks on for an extended period of time. It’s called Thanksgiving.
This year, the holiday season is laced with danger. Individually, Americans have been tempted over and over during the pandemic to violate public-health experts’ recommendations, whether by the celebration of a family milestone or just a drink at a bar. But the holiday season represents a different, more collective sort of temptation that’s likely stronger than any of the ones that came before it.

Fauci Warns Americans May Have to
‘Bite the Bullet’ and Cancel Thanksgiving
|
|
Surging coronavirus cases in many areas of the country may make it unwise to hold large family gatherings at Thanksgiving this year, particularly if elderly relatives or out-of-state travel are involved, the nation’s top infectious-disease expert told “CBS Evening News.”
“You may have to bite the bullet and sacrifice that social gathering, unless you’re pretty certain that the people that you’re dealing with are not infected,” Anthony S. Fauci said Wednesday, adding that his three children will not be coming home for Thanksgiving because his age puts him at elevated risk.

Nursing’s Seat at the Research Roundtable
|
|
WHO’s Year of the Nurse and Midwife 2020 began as an unforeseen global health-care crisis quietly gained traction. With no disease-specific prevention, treatment or cure for COVID-19, public health measures and supportive care—interventions developed and delivered largely by nurses—were the first and remain the only unequivocally effective defences against severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2.

According to the US Census Bureau (2019), the aging population is increasing and is now predicted to surpass the number of children in the US. Baby boomers will be older than 65 years of age by 2030, which means that 1 in 5 residents will be retirement age (US Census Bureau). Aging adults, who experience more chronic complex problems and comorbidities, report symptoms as the underlying cause of their disabilities (Patel et al., 2019). Indeed, the Center to Advance Palliative Care (CAPC, 2019) reported that 81% of individuals over the age of 65 are currently living with multiple chronic conditions. Older adults also rank symptom relief or management as a priority for their health (Fried, et al. (2011). With this rise of the older adult population, comes an increase in the use of healthcare services, especially the 911 system and emergency department visits, increasing healthcare costs (CAPC, 2019).

Osteoporosis screening rates are low and not a high priority during appointments. Patients are frequently surprised by the diagnosis as it is painless until a patient suffers a fracture. Fractures can result in chronic pain and functional decline. Patients often decline treatment due to medication side effects and forget to take daily calcium and vitamin D.
What is it?
Osteoporosis is defined as low bone mass with deteriorating structure which leads to an increased risk of fracture due to fragility (NIH). In 2020, IOF expects 47 million low bone mass cases and 14 million osteoporosis cases causing great financial burden. Almost 25% of women and 5% of men over 65 have osteoporosis

Nursing homes have been ground zero and the “perfect storm” for the coronavirus pandemic. Residents and staff in these facilities account for a disproportionately large share of COVID-19 cases and deaths in the United States. COVID-19 has brought into clear view many problems that have lingered under the surface for years, including low quality of care, a broken payment model, ineffective regulation, and a lack of transparency related to nursing home residents’ health outcomes and experiences. This issue brief considers how the pandemic might lead to changes in how we pay for, regulate, and deliver nursing home services.
