Shippers Find New Supply-Chain Hurdles at Alternate Ports
Smaller ports don’t have dozens of ships stacked up off the coast waiting for berth space, as do Los Angeles and the neighboring Port of Long Beach, Calif. The sites have drawn long looks from shippers and freight forwarders, and even brought them chartered ships from the growing number of retailers who are hiring vessels to get around the backups to get goods in stores for the holidays. But most don’t have enough dock workers to unload cargo or a steady supply of truckers or warehouse space to handle a big jump in cargo volumes, said Anthony Hatch, a rail transportation analyst and principal at ABH Consulting.

Panama Canal Breaks Freight Record Despite Pandemic Crisis
The Panama Canal had a record fiscal year 2021 with more tonnage transported through the waterway than ever before, despite a crisis in global port congestion, authorities said Thursday. The figure represents an 8.7% increase compared to the previous fiscal year, which itself set a record despite a slowdown in the global economy and trade linked to the COVID-19 pandemic. A total of 516 million tonnes (metric tons) passed through the channel, mainly consisting of containers, grains, chemicals and liquefied natural gas, from October 2020 through September 2021, according to the Panama Canal Authority (ACP).

Automation and Skills: A Love Story
By Elisa Tropper, CEO of Council Member Cambridge Security Seals
Across virtually every industry, for forward-thinking companies who seek to retain or enhance their long-term competitive positioning and viability, automation is an important solution towards which many are gravitating. The idea that automation is bad for the economy because it replaces workers is a popular misconception, disseminated by the often ill-informed (and predominantly unionized) American media. Automation substantially increases the number of higher-paying jobs (equipment design, build, programming, installation, and maintenance) while eliminating the lower-paying dead-end jobs currently filled by unskilled workers. This upheaval shines a light squarely on the importance of value-adding skills, as opposed to simple existence, attendance, and robot-like performance.

Community College Students Are Disappearing
Undergraduate enrollments at U.S. colleges and universities continued to decline this fall—led by a 5.6 percent drop in the community college sector and a steeper drop for the much smaller for-profit sector. Adult students, in particular, are sitting out this semester. Across the board, undergraduate enrollment is estimated to have dropped 3.2 percent, which combined with declines last fall, would amount to a 6.5 percent decrease in just two years. The numbers provide the first hard evidence that Americans aren’t just saying they’re interested in shorter non-degree options—but are starting to show up for them. Enrollment in undergraduate certificates inched up half a percentage point, while enrollment in undergraduate degree programs continued to decline. Associate degree programs were particularly hard hit, with a 6.6 percent drop.
