Pacific Institute Announces Update to Water Conflict Chronology

The Pacific Institute recently announced a significant update to the Water Conflict Chronology. This comprehensive, open-source database now includes over 350 new instances of conflict related to water resources and systems, bringing the total to over 1,630 cases. The update underscores a continuing and alarming escalation in water-related violence, particularly over the past two decades.

LEARN MORE ABOUT THE UPDATE

The updated Chronology reveals a disturbing increase in intentional attacks on civilian water systems, notably in the ongoing Russia-Ukraine War and across the Middle East, including in Gaza and the West Bank, as well as Yemen, Syria, Iraq, and Israel.

New Pacific Institute Report Uncovers "Pathways and Barriers to Corporate Water Stewardship in the Colorado River Basin"

The Colorado River is the lifeblood of the American West. It supports 30 Native American tribes and farms, cities, and ecosystems in seven US states—Arizona, California, Colorado, Nevada, New Mexico, Utah, and Wyoming—and the Mexican states of Baja California and Sonora. However, the river is in crisis. Twenty-three years of drought, the over-allocation of water, and climate change have exacerbated a structural deficit—where more water leaves the system than enters it.

Recently launched Pacific Institute report “Pathways & Barriers to Corporate Water Stewardship in the Colorado River Basin” highlights the significant role of corporations in advancing water resilience. Based on interviews with corporate and non-corporate stakeholders, the report provides key findings for building water resilience through water stewardship.

Authored by Pacific Institute Research Associate Dr. Christine Curtis and Senior Researchers Cora Snyder and Michael Cohen, "Pathways and Barriers" marks the latest contribution to the Pacific Institute’s ongoing research on Colorado River challenges and corporate water stewardship.
