Eat Smart Day

Live Healthy for a Healthy Heart

Eat Smart Day, celebrated annually on the first Wednesday of November by the American Heart Association. It is dedicated to encouraging healthy food choices, often linked to the American Heart Association's "Eat Smart Month". This day aims to raise awareness about the benefits of a nutritious diet for preventing heart disease, stroke, and other health issues.

Ways to Stay Healthy:

Balance calorie intake with physical activity.

Get at least 150 minutes per week of moderate-intensity aerobic activity or 75 minutes per week of vigorous aerobic activity, or a combination of both, spread throughout the week.

Add moderate to high-intensity strengthening activities at least 2 days per week

  • resistance
  • weights

Add a variety of fruits and vegetables. Incorporate whole grains. Focus on healthy protein sources, mostly from plants and seafood.

  • One portion of cooked meat is 3 ounces (a pirce of meat is about the size of a deck of cards)
  • a small chicken drumstick or thigh
  • 3/4 cup of flaked fish
  • 2 thin slices of lean roast beef

Eat minimally processed foods. Minimize added sugars.

Common sources of added sugars are:

  • Regular soft drinks
  • Sweetened tea and coffee
  • Energy drinks
  • Fruit drinks
  • Candy
  • Ice cream
  • Sweetened yogurts
  • Flavored and/or sweetened milk
  • Breakfast cereals and bars

Cut down on salt

Eating too much sodium can increase your blood pressure and your risk for heart disease and stroke.

Limit alcohol.

(If you don’t drink alcohol, do not start now). Excessive alcohol use can have immediate and long-term health risks

Follow these recommendations whether eating at home or dining out. Everyone can experience joy in food: all in a way that’s delicious, doable, healthy and affordable. Finding joy in your food is the best way to stay consistent in making smart choices. Those smart eating choices can even help prevent heart disease and stroke. The American Heart Association has many in-depth resources to help you get started eating well!

National Family Caregivers Month

This year’s theme: Plug-In to Care

This November, Caregiver Action Network invites you to join us in recognizing family caregivers across the country during National Family Caregivers Month (NFC Month).

The 2025 theme, Plug-in to Care, focuses on connection—helping caregivers easily “plug in” to vital support tools, trusted networks, and educational resources that can make the caregiving journey less overwhelming and more supported. Our goal this National Family Caregivers Month and beyond is to empower caregivers with easy access to the right tools, support, and community—helping them go from overwhelmed or uninformed to connected with a tap, click, or conversation.

This November, join Caregiver Action Network for Care Connections, a special Plug-in to Care Webinar Series celebrating National Family Caregivers Month 2025.

Throughout this series, we’ll spotlight a key area of caregiving and share practical tools, peer insights, and expert advice to help you connect to the resources you need. Whether you’re navigating care for the first time or balancing caregiving with work and family, this series is designed to meet you where you are.
