EL POMAR HOSTS 2022 STATEWIDE MEETING
Panel Addresses Youth Mental Health
| Every year, El Pomar Foundation convenes its regional council members and other philanthropic leaders for its Statewide meeting. This year’s general session content encouraged dialogue on issues relating to well-being, and included a panel discussion with youth mental health experts who shared insights about the challenges in addressing youth mental health, as well as effective strategies being employed across the state. This year, El Pomar recognized three organizations and five individuals around the state for outstanding service to communities of Colorado. Honored organizations received $30,000 grants, and individuals received $10,000 grants for an organization of their choosing.

El Pomar’s Internship is a paid summer program for continuing undergraduate students with a Colorado connection through an introduction to the philanthropic sector, program administration experience and leadership development opportunities. In addition to supporting El Pomar’s programs and offices, Interns participate in a professional development series, covering topics ranging from grant making to leadership theory. Interns learn through hands-on practice and receive support and guidance to develop professionally.

| WILDLAND FIRE FUND: 20 YEARS OF RESPONSIVE GRANTMAKING | This year, El Pomar Foundation recognizes 20 years of its Wildland Fire Fund. The Fund assists with the immediate emergency needs of volunteer fire fighting agencies and first responders throughout the state, as well as Search and Rescue and Emergency Medical Services (EMS) departments to help procure proper and necessary equipment. Read more about the Fund and the history of wildfires in Colorado over the last 20 years below. | PIKES PEAK HERITAGE SERIES CO-HOSTS AN EVENING WITH PHOTOGRAPHER JAMES BALOG | On November 1, El Pomar’s Pikes Peak Heritage Series co-hosted “An Evening with Jim Balog,” in partnership with Colorado College, Downtown Partnerships and the Nature Conservancy of Colorado. It was an educational and engaging evening, culminating with a book signing by Jim Balog himself. You can learn more about the event and Pikes Peak Heritage Series below. | ELD HELPS DIVERSIFY LOCAL BOARDS AND COMMISSIONS | Many boards and commissions are looking to diversify and El Pomar’s Elevating Leadership Development program has a pipeline of leaders of color who are trained and willing to serve their communities. ELD participants advance their skills and knowledge to serve their communities through a series of leadership development trainings including board governance. To date, close to 700 participants have participated in these trainings. ELD’s extensive, searchable database helps find and contact individuals, based on their skills, interests and experience, about board service opportunities. |

RESPONSE TO TRAGEDY IN COLORADO SPRINGS | In times of tragedy, El Pomar’s mission to support the well-being of the people of Colorado compels us to take action. The horrific shooting in Colorado Springs on November 19 by an individual in our community gives us a greater sense of urgency to work together to support those impacted. We are supporting Colorado Healing Fund in their work to assist with financial, emotional and physical needs in the wake of this tragedy, and are thankful for the work they do to help victims and their loved ones. | Most El Pomar grants are made through the competitive process to eligible 501(c)(3) nonprofits and government entities on a rolling basis. Several special funds are also available by application or invitation. Watch this FAQ video to help make applying easier. | GENERAL CHUCK JACOBY RETIRES | General Chuck Jacoby (U.S. Army, Retired) ended his seven-year tenure as El Pomar Foundation Trustee in September 2022. El Pomar is grateful for his service on the Board, which included helping oversee the distribution of $105 million in grants with his fellow Trustees and serving on the Metro Regional Council for six years, as well as being a favorite presenter to many Fellowship classes! Thank you, General Jacoby! | EL POMAR HOLDS 13th ANNUAL ROCKY MOUNTAIN TAX SEMINAR | In September, managers and trustees of private foundations nationwide gathered for El Pomar’s 13th Annual Rocky Mountain Tax Seminar. Notable speakers and panelists shared updates and dialogued with attendees about critical tax law changes affecting day-to-day management of their organizations. | NONPROFIT EXECUTIVES RECEIVE LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT TRAINING | In August, 18 Colorado nonprofit executive directors, CEOs and senior leaders gathered at Center for Creative Leadership in Colorado Springs for El Pomar's four-day Nonprofit Executive Leadership Program. With a theme of building and leading with resilience, participants received training on giving and receiving feedback, team collaboration, reflective listening, workplace burnout, interpersonal needs and effective communication, as well as virtual executive coaching to accelerate their leadership skills. The NELP team is in the process of re-evaluating the current format and expects to have more information about new programming early in 2023. | CURATING THE NEW HERITAGE GALLERY AT PENROSE HERITAGE MUSEUM | Penrose Heritage Museum, one of El Pomar Foundation’s three historic properties, gives visitors the opportunity to learn about the lives and community impact of El Pomar founders Julie and Spencer Penrose. Samantha Means, Assistant Curator, shares the curatorial process for creating the museum’s newest exhibit in celebration of its 80th anniversary. | GRANT TO AIR FORCE ACADEMY FOUNDATION CONTINUES LEGACY OF GIVING | El Pomar Foundation is proud to support the Air Force Academy. Most recently, the Foundation provided a grant to modernize the Air Force Academy’s Falcon Stadium, building on a longstanding relationship between both organizations.
