Residents Required to Recycle Organic Waste

California State Senate Bill 1383 requires the reduction of organic waste disposed of in landfills. Organic waste is a renewable natural resource that can be turned into compost and mulch. It mainly comes from yard and kitchen waste from homes, and food waste and scraps from industrial and commercial operations. Here are just a few examples of what can now be placed in your green waste bin:

  • Food scraps: fruit, vegetables, meat, bones, non-liquid dairy, egg shells
  • Food-soiled paper: Napkins, pizza boxes, paper plates, cardboard egg cartons
  • Yard waste: Plants, leaves, branches, grass

Food scraps can be placed in the green container loosely or in a paper bag (no plastic bags). Kitchen countertop food waste collection containers are available free of charge to Whittier residents and can be picked up from the Whittier Public Works counter at City Hall during regular business hours. Please contact your trash hauler directly with inquiries at Athens Services (888) 336-6100 or Republic Services (800) 29-4898.
