of K.Sew Co.

The Jacob Edwards Library is pleased to present K.Sew Co the creative fiber art of Kathryn Sotar. The show opens on Monday, November 1, 2021 and runs until November 30th. We hope you will come by during the month and view the show!

Reception for the artist  Thursday, November 4th, at 6:30 pm.
All welcome!

Reflecting on this unique opportunity to be Jacob Edward Library’s ‘artist of the month’ for both November of 2020 (virtual) and in November 2021 I can not help but to compare the two collections- the haphazard one I prepared anxiously in 2020, which was presented as a virtual show during the height of Covid-19, and the one I confidently present here, in person, in 2021.

I’d like to say that I have spent this past year meticulously honing in on my craft and creating the artsy-ist art of all art, when in reality, the past almost 2 years have been hard. To come out the other side of a global pandemic is no small feat for anyone. 2021, however, is full of hope. Going through this collective experience illustrates that we are all connected and are capable of moving forward together. On a personal level I have gained patience and the ability to remain present which has impacted my work immensely. It is all about the journey after all and now I walk a little lighter, I hope you feel that way too.

This collection highlights the works of K.SEW Co., my sewing services business. These works include contracted pieces as well as in-house made items that are available for purchase. We are honoring Native American Heritage month with several pieces inspired by simple and beautiful indigenous symbols.

Thank you for taking a look - follow us to stay up to date

Kathryn Sotar is a quirky Southbridge resident and lifelong member of the Jacob Edwards Library. She is a graduate of UMASS Amherst with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Marketing. When she is not working in her solar powered sewing workshop, Kathryn enjoys traveling, reading, sitting on the ground, live music, yoga, bullet journaling, hanging out with her cat Jody and going on hikes with her dog Reggie.

Inspired by her parents’ entrepreneurial spirit, K.Sew Products (now K.Sew Co.) was founded in 2015, the name of which is a play on her old high school nickname, K.So. K.Sew’s sewing services began by producing cushions for Hoyt Running Chairs and remains their proud outfitters to this day. With a focus on quality construction and locally sourced, upcycled and sustainable materials, K.Sew Co. now has a growing client list and is pursuing the goal of creating their own line of in-house products. These products are inspired by her Japanese heritage as well as modern trends, different cultures and the environment around her.
They hope to promote the use of repurposed materials, less waste and emphasizing the idea that it sometimes benefits us to “think inside the box” by using what we already have.

Kathryn would like to thank her parents Nick & Yuri, her sister Anna, Hoyt Running Chairs, Victory Project, her loving supportive friends, her sewing helpers Marioly and Fiona, as well as Margaret and Stephanie at Jacob Edwards Library for this opportunity.
November Staff Picks

"A moving, funny, engrossing novel about mothers and daughters, and one woman's midlife reckoning. On the heels of the election of 2016, Samantha Raymond's life begins to come apart: her mother is ill, her teenage daughter is increasingly remote, and at 52, she finds herself staring into "the Mids"--that hour of supreme wakefulness between three and four in the morning in which women of a certain age suddenly find themselves contemplating motherhood, mortality, and, in this case, the state of our unraveling nation. When she falls in love with a beautiful, decrepit house in a hardscrabble neighborhood in Syracuse, she buys it on a whim and flees her suburban life--and her family--as she grapples with how to be a wife, a mother, and a daughter, in a country that is coming apart at the seams.

"The James Webb Space Telescope (sometimes called JWST or Webb) is an orbiting infrared observator that will complement and extend the discoveries of the Hubble Space Telescope, with longer wavelength coverage and greatly improved sensitivity. The longer wavelengths enable Webb to look much closer to the beginning of time and to hunt for the unobserved formation of the first galaxies, as well as to look inside dust clouds where stars and planetary systems are forming today." from https://www.jwst.nasa.gov/

The library has scheduled a presentation with Dino Tata, Solar System Ambassador for NASA . This exciting program by Mr. Tata will present a short slide presentation that will allow the audience to experience the research and development that has gone into creating the Webb Telescope, how the telescope was constructed, discuss the significant technological innovation that this has made to science, and review other features of this amazing tool.
